G60 Nightmare! What's wrong?

Recommended Posts

Right...I'm a noob on this forum but I've lost all patience for my MK2 conversion and could do with the collective obsessive minds on here sharing some knowledge.

I own a MK2 OAK GREEN G60 conversion and it drove for 850 miles after the conversion before the head gasket went (cream/mayonaise in water and lovely rainbow drops everywhere). Anyway gasket was replaced with steel one. Head skimmed and pressure checked etc. again. It was running the old 16v radiator from the previous engine to get it on the road but the radiator seemed fine. It was completely blocked with the gunk when it went so replaced it with a new aluminium 16v one after the head was done. Changed the water pump for an uprated one. Checked all oil lines etc. Low temp fan switch (set at 80), low temp thermo...

Almost everything major/rotating has been replaced over the last year but after head was done again got another 3/400 miles and it seemed to have the cream back in the coolant albeit this time without the rainbow/oil mix. Drained the system and flushed it presuming it was reminants from the previous gasket fail or some bizarre reaction to the anti freeze. Got another 500 miles or so without any real problems( apart from isv valve issues and loads of other stupid teething probs - every drive was an adventure LOL) and the oil temp rocketed on the motorway to 118 (usually ran at about 102). Pulled into the hard shoulder and it was spitting the thick gunk out the overflow on the expansion bottle. Let it cool down and started it. Turns out the head was completely blocked this time with the same old stuff. Seemed to have developed a sinister oil leak at the back of the block i.e. oil running down the back at the four branch and a lovely pattern every 10 feet behind me on the hard shoulder. Oil light was flashing but I assumed this was the temp. Is this light for pressure? If so is it the oil pump as I think this is the last wee bugger not to be replaced although it obviously should have been at the time. The conversion was initially done on a budget as I had planned on selling the car but time and an unhealthy love for square golfs chamged that. It's had a small fortune thrown at it since then and I now have no idea whether its the block or oil pump or whatever. New pistons/rings etc. when it was built so althougfh on budget was'nt cowboy stuff. HELP!!!

The only other thing worth mentioning is the dip stick holder is broken but it still lines up to where it should sit as there's only a small break.

hi

did you do a compression test before diagnosing the head gasket? also its worth checking the coolant for combustion gasses (pop to a local mot station and ask nicely for them to sniff the header tank) if you havent checked these items then its difficult to accuratly diagnoise a head gasket failure without first checking the oil cooler on top of the filter housing as the symptoms ie water in the oil and vice versa are the same! if the cooler has failed (this might just explain the loss of oil pressure too!)

hope this helps

As said above, oil coolers are a common problem and can often appear like a headgasket issue at a quick glance. Replace to cooler and see if you can get hold of some Forte Bio-degreaser. Its the best thing for munching its way through that mayonaise in the engine!
