Shouldn't this be connected to something?

Anyone know what this is, lambda sensor maybe? It's just a blocked off rubber hose attatched to a thin metal tube, that seems to go onto the exhaust downpipe. :shrug: :confused4:

Exhaust gas analysis sample pipe I would think. I have something similar on ABF engine. Just keep it blocked up, as shown. It does not need to be connected to anything else.

Roger Blassberg is right on - it's there to sample exhaust gas pre-catalytic convertor. There is actually a proper rubber bung for it which your car seems to have lost along the way and has been replaced with a DIY job but I'd be surprised if it wasn't still available from VW for a few quid :)
