big block under the engine?

just removed my kr engine and ive noticed at the back near the fire wall theres a big block of metal.

is this needed it looks heavy and pointless?

and whats it actualy do?

vibration reducing counterweight for the subframe, it isn't needed but like various refinements on the Corrado it's a development of the mk2 golf chassis.
