G60 idle problems loss of power

Recommended Posts

been looking at other threads similar to my problem but wanted to hear what people had to say

just had the G back from the garage due to gearbox failure

they fitted a secondhand box, both driveshafts replaced plus new clutch

however now although changes gear great the engine runs like a bag of shit! :(

has a very low idle 500rpm its also stalling frequently

plus you dont always get full power when accelerating

what do people think is causing the problem?.....a pipe loose or problems with my crank maybe??

detailed advise would be most appretiated :confused4:

Hi mate,

First check would be earths, there is one running to the right side of the engine block from the back of the battery. Check that they are actually refitted, and maybe remove/clean and refit them.

Also there will be some smaller brown coloured ones running to either:

The right side of the cylinder head or the water outlet on the side of the head.

Has the garage not had anything to say about it?

Neil.

Please be very careful, I would advise not driving the car until it is sorted, if it is the earths you could end up blowing your ECU, that is how important these earth straps are.

It will be the earth straps, they are vital to a smooth running digifant system.

ha ha had the same problem then? so you def dont think its something more serious like the crank?

so if its just the cables any half decent mechanic will be able to sort in no time then?

it will be an educated guess based on your symptoms and the recent work you have had done.

been told off another forum to check:

Earth on the throttle boddy to the coil

Earth on the water out let facing the left of the car out of the head (run a lead from the stud to the battery)

Battery earth lead aint on a clean bit of gearbox

Air temp sensor aint plugged in right

The boost pipes to and from the intercooler are leaking due to old clips or not being sitted properly

sound reasonable?

Pretty much mate, the most important things there are the earths at the battery to gearbox and the side of the head/water outlet.

oh and took me ages but found more info which helped to diagnose the problem

OK, idle problems on G60 which run but poorly tend to be from one of 4 common faults.. check these and see what happens.

1) Vacuum pipe between ECU and the top nipple on the back of the throttle body. This needs to be EXACTLY 100cm long and have a good fitting at either end to seal it properly... this will give all sorts of nasty running and idling problems if it's wrong, torn, leaky or just generally crap...

2) Blue temp sender in the water flange on the front of the hose. This tells the ECU what temp the coolant is at. If it's broken, then the car will either run on choke all the time, or will never run on choke.. either way, it'll result in naff idle and flat spots...

3) Dead lambda sensor... this lives at the start of the cat pipe, the wiring is on the left hand side rear engine mount as you look from the front of the car... when this dies, you're car will feel flat and DRINK fuel... idle will also become lumpy due to over-fuelling...

4) air leak... If you have a leak in one of your boost pipes, intercooler or vacuum hoses, the ECU won't be getting reasonable signals and the engine won't run properly...
