smudge 0 Posted December 22, 2009 I have spent an unhealthy amount of time searching on the forum and have decided to get the coolant system replaced when I go to stealth for the head rebuild, clutch, chains next year. I am planning to replace the crack pipe (gruvenparts) thermostat housing (both parts) including the blue, yellow and black sensors. I am also going to go for the samco hoses and new rad, with gruvenpart rad. neck. Now then! I have decided not to go for the low temp stat (live in Scotland and don't sit in traffic too often, dont want to wait 15 minutes for eng. to warm up). Really can't decided if I should go for the r32 one? - not too much feed back on the forum for this mod - or go for the normal one which has lots of bad feedback! I also wonder if while I am at it I should think about a new radiator fan - can't find too much about that? I will definitely be spent up after all that lot - decided since my car in going to be in bits and I hope to keep it for many years to come may as well get it all done at once. :D Thanks again Smudge. KipVR 1 Posted December 22, 2009 Personally if the rest of the car is standard, I'd leave it all as it is, the low temp stats don't actually improve the car they make things worse. The best thing you could do is make sure the rad is in good condition, and make sure the whole system is flushed through thoroughly and working as it should. smudge 0 Posted December 23, 2009 Thanks kipvr totally agree don't need a low temp stat with standard setup. I do want to replace the stat but have read bad things here about the standard VW one not working- anyone replace theirs recently? any problems. I got the impression the r32 would fit and might be more relable (think it is the same temp as the vr6 one). Also has anyone replaced their radiator fan - any recomendations? I was advised to use the R32 stat and did so, sure it was the same temp or near as damn it.
smudge 0 Posted December 27, 2009 Thanks gogsboy - I will get one ordered up :salute:
gogsboy 0 Posted December 28, 2009 No probs, where abouts in Scotland are you? I think if your in the guts of the crack pipe etc there are a couple of little hoses worth replacing, or maybe they are in the samco kit?
smudge 0 Posted December 28, 2009 In Aberdeenshire, I am going to do the samco kit at the same time - better get that ordered soon aswell - can take weeks from what I have read.
gogsboy 0 Posted December 28, 2009 In Aberdeenshire, Me too, used to be in BOD but out in the sticks now. Yes believe the hoses can take a while, keep your eye out for a second hand set, they seem to pop up every now and then, think was a set on ED38 but perhaps for Golf VR, not sure if they are the same. smudge 0 Posted December 28, 2009 Cool good to know there are other corrado owners around here - fancy the black samco hoses so think I am going to have to bight the bullet on a new set! Where do you get work done on your car around these parts? did they recommend the r32 stat. I get my car serviced in Stonehaven at First drive.
gogsboy 0 Posted December 29, 2009 I've had the damn thing since 2006 and it's spent most of it's life in the garage...rotting away! Good question about work on the car, used place out in Banchory previously (C & Ds), the guy used to do some work at the house but he's too busy now. Been trying to get someone to come out and get it fixed up so can get it tested but been let down a few times, got a leak so too risky to drive too far! Have all the parts I think it will need but seems a lot of people not too keen on working on the VR6. Heard First drive meant to be good, have you heard much about Brickfield out Stoney way? What's FD labour rates light, had some work done on a VW by a specialist out Meldrum and their hourly rate was £30 plus vat, bit lighter on the pocket than speccy cars £95 or so. I forget who recommended the stat, it wasn't Stealth think it was another popular tuning type place, if I heard the name it would click....think it might have been Storm Developments, infact pretty sure. They were pretty helpful with regards to giving advice on the phone. I was hoping they could develop my storm....well getting it running again minus leaks would be a start! Nevermind the Golf 4mo is a good substitute with winter tyres....the supercharger intended for the VR6 (gathering dust) might even land up on the 4mo at this rate if that's possbile! smudge 0 Posted December 29, 2009 Haven't heard of Brickfield - First Drive charge £34 per hour plus vat which is not too bad these days, they also have all the vag group testing equipment - might be worth a call. Supercharger on either car sounds like a good idea!!
