Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 6, 2010 Sorry to thread hijack but I get a little ticking noise from the tappets on my C when cold, what oil would people reccomend to minimise this? Last oil change I just used 10W40 Havoline Synthetic from my local petrol station as it was cheap. It never reallyt bothered me, just put it down to being an old car with 150k miles but if I can get rid of it by using posh oil I would like to. Could be piston slap. I haven't heard a VR6 that doesn't rattle a little when cold. If the noises go when hot, I wouldn't worry about it. Silkolene Pro S 10W/50 is an oil the VR6 seems to really like. Reduces consumption makes it feel super smooth :D Mike, I would try a 24V converted Corrado first before committing yourself! It's a great engine but it's incredibly snatchy at low revs and some people find it difficult to drive smoothly. It has a narrower power band than the 12V aswell, but again, some folk prefer all the action below 4000rpm instead of beyond it.
MikeVR6 0 Posted May 6, 2010 Kev what engine would you recommend then to replace the VR? From the quote (in German) I can see they priced a 4 motion engine from VW.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 6, 2010 Oh right, didn't realise you're living in Germany. Did they include the cost of the 4 Motion ECU and associated wiring in the quote? Not sure what to recommend really. If you like low down torque, then the 4 motion engine isn't a bad choice, or maybe a 1.8T conversion. The cheapest option would be another 12V but sounds like your garage aren't keen on that idea!
MikeVR6 0 Posted May 6, 2010 They did include all the extras. They seem to think it won't be possible to find a 2.9 VR6 for some reason.

mattwelcer 0 Posted August 11, 2010 Sounds like a plan, where in Köln are you, I live near Stuttgart. Why are you taking it back to the UK to have a rebuild? I know Stealth are very reputable but it seems an expensive way when there are lots of places here in DE that can do the same job. Or you could do it yourself? ;) and I didn't understand the comment from earlier about not being able to work on the car in a shared garage, what's that all about??? MikeVR6 0 Posted August 11, 2010 I'm on the East side aye. Near Koln Arena. I got advice from Stealth. But the car is being worked on here by an engine specialist. Schmitz & Kreiger. They worked on the original VR6 engines for VW and they do work for Toyota Motorsport. In our apartment block it is "verboten" to work on your car in the underground parking. Even changing my wheels over for the Winter I got some funny looks. Similar to the way it's illegal to wash your car unless it is at a dedicated wash area. There are some strange rules here. MikeVR6 0 Posted December 17, 2010 Got the VR back from the engine shop yesterday. It took an age for the Woessner Pistons and some other parts to arrive. Driving lovely and smooth even with the reduced compression (ready for Turbo next year) Gonna give her a good clean and put her to bed until March. Dirty Mk4 TDi is my daily at the moment
