Driveshaft gaitor split - how easy?

Recommended Posts

Whilst stripping down the brakes yesterday I noticed that the rubber gaiter near the gearbox has split. How easy a job is it - has anyone a guide? Typically it's the off side, which is buried in the middle of the car!

Thanks!

I'M DOING THIS IN CAPS AS THEY ARE LOUDER SO YOU CAN HEAR WITH YOUR TOWEL ON!¬

THIS NEEDS FIXING AS IT'S AN MOT FAILURE AND WILL ALLOW CRAP INTO YOUR CV JOINT WHICH IT WON'T LIKE!

YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE DRIVE SHAFT. AT THE GEARBOX END VW USE SPLINED CAP HEAD BOLTS....YOU NEED THE CORRECT TOOL, HEX DRIVE WILL DAMAGE THESE AND MAY MAKE REMOVAL VERY DIFFICULT.

LOOSEN THE DRIVE SHAFT TO HUB BOLT WITH THE WHEEL ON THE GROUND, THEN RAISE CAR UP AND UNDO DRIVE SHAFT TO GEARBOX. YOU MAY BE ABLE TO GET SHAFT OUT THEN, IF NOT SEPARATE THE HUB/UPRIGHT ASSEMBLY FROM THE WISHBONE TO GIVE MORE ROOM FOR MANOUVRE. AT END OF DRIVE SHAFT IS A CIRCLIP, REMOVE THIS AND DRIVE THE CV JOINT OFF (YOU WILL NEED SOME FORM OF SOFT FACED HAMMER). sLIDE OFF OLD GAITER, FIT NEW AND RE-ASSEMBLE.

ALL THIS IS EXPLAINED IN HAYNES MANUALS (GOLF) TOGETHER WITH PICTURES.

HOPE THIS HELPS.
