16V camshaft bearing issues

Recommended Posts

Hi all hoping someone can help!

I have been carrying out a head chnage on my 16v and got distraced with other projects while this was taking place.

I have forgotten in which order the camshaft bearings should go on. Got the main end ones sorted but its the ones number 1 to 8 which have thrown me. Can someone either let me know or supply a picture of the correct layout/way round these should go on ?

Thanks

Andrew

i thought they were numbered 1 to 4 over the exhaust cam and 5 to 8 over the inlet cam.

i always just tightened them all up progressively to limit bend of the cams, sure someone with haynes handy can confirm.

The caps go in number order but making sure the audi/vw logo is on the right hand side of the caps, otherwise the cams wont turn.

Correct. Just to add that caps No 1 and No 5 are at the cambelt end of the engine (NOT the cam chain that connects the two shafts). There should also be a notched corner on each cap which is fitted on the front side of the engine. (Looks as if the corner has been filed off)
