Nova 1.1 pushrod sounding engine

Recommended Posts

I was wondering did anyone ever encounter a loud clicking in the head of a 1.8 16v that sounded like worn shim's or something and if so what did they do 2 sort it out, I have a 1990 16v for about a year and a half and it's just started doin this clickin, sounds like a 1.1 nova pushrod engine, u know, really annoying, i have noticed some oil in the distributor cap? I have the rocker cover off at the moment and considering replacing the shim's and hydraulic lifter's, but dont want 2 start stripping any further in case it's something simple, the only other problem i ever had with the car is when it busted up the inside of the distributor about 3 months after i bought it, i replaced it and the cars drove fine since until now.

Hi JC, , welcome to the forum

Just thinking, if there was oil in the distributer cap then that maybe the root of your problem. Hopefully tou'll get some assistance from the forum.

Good luck!

Well tappits on the Corrado can start to get very loud over 90,000 miles depending on how the car was driven in the past. I had the tappits replaced on my Corrado in the middle of last year as they were starting to become noticable in general use, and very noticable when starting the car from cold. It was about £200 all in at a specialist, but as you are doing them yourself you might as well do them!

I am definately no mechanic but replacing all the tappits might help.

Cheers dan, and im still tryin 2 get on2 this computer, I was talkin 2 a mechanic earlier on 2day and jim ur not far wrong, the mechanic reckons 1 shim and tappet costs roughly around £10, and i need 1 shim and tappet per valve! £160, so that puts operation corrado on hold for a while, and dan im gettin the distributor looked at 2nite, although i reckon the tappets should cure my problem, and whats £160 ehh, sure my corrado's priceless 2 me! she's worth every penny, i'll just skip this months morgage! :D :D :D

I must get a couple of pictures of my 16v shortly and stick em on the computer, that is a nice corrado u had jim, nice colour, great shot under the tree, i got mine recently resprayed as she was dulling with the sun, could not B bothered 2 rub the old paint with G3 or even T-cut, i reckon thats butchery, got her redone tornado red + laquered, dans seen it, reckons it looks well, plus a nice set of 17inch rims and an eyebrow, i also have the windscreen water sprayers removed and fitted 2 the wipers, makes cleanin the car easier, dans idea, shes also very low and with a leather interior, im goin on a bit, i'll let the pic's do the talkin, and by the way i forgot 2 mention, my corrado is slightly over 100,000 miles :D , slightly my a#;e, :D

JC I think you'll find that the corrado 16v and any vw after 1985 has hydraulic tappets which don't require shims as they are self adjusting!!! I could be wrong but I dont think I am and a hydraulic tappet will generally be around £6 a piece depending on where you get them from!!!

Theres about 126,000 on my corrado at the moment andi, but the cam's seem nice and smoothly rounded yet, no scraps or ragged edges which people tell me is a bad sign.

I had 2 log off early lads on wed nite, woman bother, can't seem 2 get one!! Thanks for the welcome 2 the site chuck, still waitin 2 get a couple of pictures taken of my car, so u's can get a look at her.

Banana man i will take ur word for it about the tappets cause i havent got the cam's out yet and i cant see down by em at the minute, very compact, and if u know anywhere i could get a complete tappet set at the right money i would very much appreciate it, look's like i'll be doin the whole job myself as my da's a mechanic and just could not be assed 2 look at it, and im definatley NO mechanic!! :?

JC I could probably get them from work but Euro car parts have better buying power than us and would probably be able to do them at a better price!!! Take a look at what they can do em at at http://www.eurocarparts.co,uk I think they're around 6 quid each so a set would cost £72+vat and then carriage of about a teener on top of that!!!

I checked out the eurocarparts site banana man and there £6.40 each+vat, so u were not far wrong, thats 1 flash lookin corrado man, always had a notion yellow wouldnt suit a corrado but boy was I wrong :silly: .

Definatley a nice car, wheels look well, good job the grill was left black cause if it was yellow i think it would take away the corrados bad attitude look!!

I will let u know the crack if i need those tappets dude, chances are i will, just not while sure about how 2 go about ordering them, i'll c dan durin the week, he's more used 2 this crack than i am. :thumbleft:

Cheers JC just phone them up give your card details and postal address and they'll send em out to you they're phone number is +44 (0)20 8956 5000.

I think your right about the grille I saw one colour coded today and I didn't like it at all it doesn't look right on the old 5 slat grille. I used to have venoms mesh grille (pic below) but went back to the standard grille as I thinks it looks better!!! :D

Cheers dude for that phone number and information, shows how stupid i am, had no idea it was that easy, only got my credit card about a week ago, never had 1 b4, but i have another problem bothering me now, a guy at work was telling me why not go for a set of road race cam's instead of just tappets, cause apparantley u get tappets and cams all in the 1 set for about £100 odd pound's more? Plus it will give my little corrado a kick up the butt in BHP? What u think? I got a couple of pictures of my corrado b4 any mod's, dan had em, he was the last owner, so u might have seen em b4.

U were right about the grill's banana man, although the venom grill dosnt look bad, the black grill is the only 1 that suit's, i have the rieger 2 bar grill in mine now, well 3 bar if u include the eyebrow, and ive kept the 2 bars black but spayed the eyebrow red, i suppose thats what everyone do's anyway? 8)
