boost monkey 0 Posted January 8, 2011 I've just realised that I have no information for my car to tell me that the gearbox has been swapped or rebuilt, and the car has just passed 185,000 miles. Is there any kind of ballpark figure for transmissions lifespan on our cars? Engine's a KR, so whatever gearbox code goes with that :D Jon.
Supercharged 2 Posted January 8, 2011 VW boxes are very strong, on a standard car they could last almost forever if treated well, a decent oil like redline helps prolong life and also hide syncro wear
Yandards 0 Posted January 9, 2011 Box is usually ok, what tends to wear out is 2nd gear syncro making it harder to select 2nd when cold. As Mr charged said the boxes are strong, if you take Mr Haywire's rebuilt box as an example even with the shorter diff in it generating higher running speeds its still been faultless. dannyboy 0 Posted January 9, 2011 cold, crunchy second had it on my GTI valver and raddo.both KRs I think 02a boxes are nails and last ages(unless ragged daily).i suppose they only need overhauling when it starts to get crunchy syncros and sloppy bearings but check oil every two years.some people do it every year but i think its overservicing and not needed
