Whine type noise – not bearings (I think)

Hi

I am wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of where a constant whine type noise might be emanating from. The obvious cause would be the rear wheel bearings but I had them changed less than 3K miles ago. I am pretty sure the whine is coming from the rear – although I also wondered if it is something to do with the aging Milltek SS exhaust system.

I have an excellent “insurance add on to my policy that gives me up to £500 for parts and labour in the event of a breakdown so if I would identify what the problem is I could maybe “breakdown” close to my local VW specialist!

Where the bearings genuine?

When you ear the whining try and pull the hand break and see if it makes any difference. The bearing might need tightning.

Can't be sure but it was at the guy I have used for years and he is always going on about using genuine parts. Maybe I will give him a call if no one can think of any anything else.

have you got cheap tyres,mine makes a noise ive changed bearings but put it down to my triangle cheap tyres now

I had Goodyear eagle F1 all round but had to replace one of the back ones in an emergancy with a hangkook thing - but that was quite a while ago and the noise has really only manifested itself recently. Still - might swap the fronts on to the back and see if that makes any kind of noticable difference.

not much on the rear that will whine , cheap bearings , bearings that need re ajusting , mis shapen tyre

Got a day off on Wed so going to try swapping the wheels around. Tried out the handbrake test and it apeeraed to make no difference. What is involved with readjusting the bearings?

center cap off the disc , split pin out , castle nut thingy off , then ajust the nut to your liking ...replace all the bits n bobs

 

i know theres some bumpf in the manuals about ajusting them , i prefer to go hand tight on the nut , spin the wheel and feel for play and then only just nip it a touch if theres any play

 

trouble is if he used cheap bearings you wont know , my golf (same set up) howled like a good un , i blamed it on my tyres but thought id replace the bearings anyway , the old bearings had just passed an mot , no play , span up nice with no roughness , looked fine when i inspected them , BUT they was the cause lol

Defo not the fuel pump - I know what that sounds like from previous experience!

I know this may sound a bit as though I am contradicting myself but could it possibly but emanating from the front and just “appearing" to be towards the rear (which why I asked if maybe the Milltek SS exhaust may be showing its age).

Update - I changed the whels around today and when I came to do the off side rear and noticed the hub was "snagging" at the same point each time I spun it. I remember a thread on here talking about EBC discs warping so I took the pads out, pushed the caliber piston back in, refitted the pads and the hub spun free again. I took it out for a run and the noice/vibration was greatly reduced. So I am hoping the problem was down to the disc?
