sam2.0 10 Posted January 11, 2012 I tent to get a small squeak out of a belt when starting, then a few mins down the road again. Dipping the clutch stops (or makes it so quite I can't hear it). Any ideas? Or do I need to drop it into a garage?
RW1 0 Posted January 11, 2012 Old belt needing renewal or a belt is under tensioned. Check belt deflection. All belts (Alternator/Steering Pump) - 5mm deflection using your thumb in the middle of the longest free span between pulleys. .
StArRaDo 10 Posted January 12, 2012 (edited) Good stuff...I've been having the same issue. Believe it's been my water pump being there's been a lot of moisture build up on that side of the engine, accumulating a lot of grime. @ first I thought it was the power steering pulley; after looking down the side watching the pulleys it was the only one that seemed to be a bit "wobbly" during rotation. My belt looks great and feels fairly secure, but too tight or a little too loose I wouldn’t kno, so I'm most deff check the tension on the belt asap... sam2.0 10 Posted January 24, 2012 Belt tension seems fine. I now get a constant 'rubbing' noise when going along, it also gets fast as the car is revved. This is idle and under load. The closest specialist is a fair distance, not somewhere I can pop to during the day. I also don't want to get there and them tell me I need to do a whole belt swap (££$$£). Is there anything I can do to try and stop it, even if it'll identify the part making the noise?
Stonejag 10 Posted January 24, 2012 Have you slackened off the tensioner bolts for any reason? I've got the top tensioner bolt threaded through my CDA mount and it squeals furiously if I don't do it back up quite tight enough when I disassemble things (takes a lot more torque than you might think!). That's on a VR6 btw, similar deal with the other engines too though? Stone
sam2.0 10 Posted January 24, 2012 I've not touched it, may be someone else or lose still? But I have no idea what I need to do to tighten it...
sam2.0 10 Posted January 26, 2012 I took a video, so you can hear what its like. Driving me nuts! http://e46zone.com/Uploads/IMG_2427.MOV
slimtim 0 Posted January 31, 2014 Resurrecting an old thread: my 2.0 16v is making exactly the same noise as in the video. I noticed from another thread that you changed the water pump, did this sort the noise out?
sam2.0 10 Posted January 31, 2014 Hi, I did swap the pump, a bit after this topic, and it stopped. But it may have been the tension on the belt. The old pump was also eating its self, metal on metal. It's not a hard job, so I'd swap the pump, belts and coolant and it should be good!
