Recommended Posts

no need to drain it m8, its already burnt off the excess!!

Its more the leak I'm worried about, I have no idea where to start looking for it!

Is it still leaking now that the oil level is about right again? If it's not I wouldn't worry about it too much as engines tend to loose a little more oil than normal when overfilled... Basically, when overfilled, it'll find any way out it can until it's back to it's normal level...

If it's still using oil now that it's back the the correct kinda level jack the car up and have a look around the engine to see if you can see anything obvious, if not, then you're passing oil into the cylinders via the either the head (gasket or valve stem seals) or the piston rings... :?

Intake boot?? What / where's that then?

All I know is I pulled off my Dads drive at the weekend after leaving it parked there for a couple of hrs & he pointed out a small oily patch. When I got home I noticed that there are a couple of small patches on my driveway. I placed a peice of cardboard under it straight away & left it parked overnite. Checked the cardboard next morning & there wasn't a drop there.

Sounds like you may have been lucky then - external leaks are usually cheaper to fix.

What you'll need to do is clean the oily patches on the engine, either with a steam cleaner or with brake/clutch cleaner. Run the engine untril it's warm & look for where the oil's leaking. Hot engines leak more oil than cold ones, it is to do with the metal contracting/expanding at different temeratures.

The increased oil pressure caused by overfilling the engine will folow the 'path of least resistance' - it will find the easiest way out of the engine. If you had a dodgy crank seal, for example, that would now be leaking.

It really is luck as to where the oil will be coming from.

cheers m8, I think I've found the leak. there seems to be a small amount leaking out of the oil filter housing. Not sure how I'm gonna fix it though :(

May have just blown a gasket/seal.

You'll need to drain the oil to do it. Get a new set of housing seals & gaskets, strip & rebuild - with new oil & filter

Not essential to change the oil again but I would.

just hold on there mannie i might be able to help ye there. i over filled mine one time and over time more and more oil was itting around the oil filter part of the engine. I replaced all the gaskets, o-rings shit like that. fired the car up and it still leaked. wanna know where?? it was comin out of one of the senders in the top of the filter housing, the white one. £7 from VW and a 22mm spanner and its all good now. Just thought i would chuck that in because all those gaskets and stuff took a fair while to change, save ye some hassle there like

Another word or two of warning my problems started with oil leaking in the same place - after changing all the wrong bits it eventualy turned out to be the oil pump... it was pi$$ing out though rather than just a little leak so you're prob ok

cheers m8 it looks like it is just coming out of one of the senders but I can't be sure until I take a closer look. Thanks for the tips!

Yep, I had a leaky sender do the same thing on an old Mk2 Golf I had years ago, it's always nice when an oil leak is an easy fix! Going back even further as a 'yoof' I used to run a clapped out but fun Mk1 Ford Escort, put up with an oil leak for a year, never quite got round to looking in to the problem, just topped it up every week....turned out to be a minute hole in the oil filter! How we laughed!

One eskimo to another...'looks like youv'e blown a seal!....

......'nah mate, it's only milk'
