Intermittent Absence of Spark

Recommended Posts

Folks

My normal garage has given up on trying to fix this problem!

The problem is intermittent and is down to an absence of spark (I suspect the immobiliser but can't be sure as I have the technical skills of a household brick). One out of every ten starts the engine turns over but doesn't come to life. Eventually, if you keep trying for 5-40mins it will kick into life. The crank shaft sensor has already been replaced but this hasn't sorted the problem.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking it needs to go to a VW / Corrado specialist. Anyone able to recommend one in the Cheltenham area?

Thanks in advance

Jon

What car do you have?? Engine / Year?? Did the garage do a diagnostic, if so any codes?

Did they try a new ignition switch, ECU and Fuel pump relays before changing the crank sensor?

If it's a late (1994) car with factory immobiliser there is a common issue with a simple fix!

Non starting is usually immobiliser/ignition barrel. What flavour of Corrado is it mate ?

If it runs ok once you do start then it would appear to rule out the coilpack (if you have one)

Looks like everyone answered at once !!

It's a K reg VR6 with an after market Toad immobiliser. I know they have messed around with the ignition and that they have ruled out a problem with the fuel pump. Part of the problem is that they don't have the diagnostic kit for Corrados (sad I know but in other ways they've been an excellent gargage over the years).

Thanks for the replies. Going to see how it goes and then either take it to Challenge or try a mobile auto electrician since I'm pretty much convinced it's a paranoid immobiliser.
