jonk710 10 Posted February 2, 2013 Hi all, Lewis from Montrose. Been into VW's for as long as I can remember, currently drive a Mk5 GtTDi & a Golf Rallye. Looking to buy a Corrado as a run around for a few months whilke the Rallye is away getting painted. I've been offered a VR6 Storm in green with cream leather with 148000mls. I have no clue about VR6's or Corrado's so any advice for buying would be appreciated. Is the VR6 good for 148000mls? What should I look out for? Cheers
Portent 0 Posted February 2, 2013 VRs take mileage well. Things to look out for: Has the timing chain and tensioned been replaced? Not essential but probably due for it at this mileage. Not a deal baker. Do all electrics work? Heater controls work at all speed and direction settings? Common issues are Bowden cables breaking for direction controls, the duals themselves braking and the heater only working on speed 4. Do both mirrors move? Common issues are mirror motors and the switch inside. Does the sunroof slide and tilt? Common issues are sunroof motors, breaking sunroof mechanisms. Does the spiller go up and down both on the switch and automatically at speed? Common issues are spoiler motors. Watch out for rust. A lot of parts are obsolete now, particularly body and trim parts. When was the heater matrix last replaced? These often fail and it's a dash out job. And welcome :)
jonk710 10 Posted February 2, 2013 I called and asked him The mirrors dont work but all other electrics are fine There is no history of the chains being done Bodywork is good Heater works, no problems Engine pulls but is running a bit rough He's looking for 1500 for it but TBH I don't want the hassle of timing etc as it'll be a bit costly for a few months of fun! blueskev 10 Posted February 2, 2013 Heater controls work at all speed and direction settings? Common issues are Bowden cables breaking for direction controls, the duals themselves braking and the heater only working on speed 4. Is this caused by the fan motor speed controller packing up? Ive seen a car advertised with this problem. Regards, Kev.
Portent 0 Posted February 2, 2013 Sorry for the poor wording on my first reply. Phone auto correct changed some of the words. I've not had the issue myself of only working on speed 4, but apparently it's a failed resistor and easily fixed: http://website.lineone.net/~quigger/heater.htm
Rustynuts 0 Posted February 3, 2013 Lots of parts are obsolete, but lots of people breaking as cars worth more in bits than as a whole. If you have a chance on a cheap storm then buy it and keep it as they will only go up in price
