JakeDG 10 Posted May 19, 2013 Hey, this is my first post and I am really in need of some help! I have a 2.0L 16V 1994 and every now and again it refuses to start. I believe I have narrowed the problem down to a sensor on the side of the block but I'm not 100% sure. When it dies the oil light blinks and it will only crank not fire. If I pop the bonnet, unplug then replug this sensor it fires straight away. It's on the right hand side of the block with 2 wires one purple with black trace another brown with white trace. If anyone can tell me if this sensor would cause this or even what this sensor is it would help very much! Thank you.
bmwcompact 10 Posted May 19, 2013 Its the coolant temp sensor which informs the ECU of engine temp (its nothing to do with temp gauge-thats the other sensor on this (right) end of the block closer to the bulkhead.) The 2l 9A has coolant temp sensor 026 906 161 (Bosch part no 0280130040 which costs about £25) or you can get the Meyle equivalent from VW Heritage : see link below. The ECU uses temp info to enrich the mixture when the engine is cold. The ECU also controls the 5th injector which only operates when the engine is cold. http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Coolant-Temperature-Sensor-Most-Mk2-Golf-Jetta-026906161_act_shop.product_pID_16373433_lang_EN_country_GB.htm
