Diagnosis Please - heater matrix kaput??

Recommended Posts

Guys I need a diagnosis.

Cleaning up the interior yesterday I discovered the driver side footwell carpet felt damp! "Drat, I think my heater matrix is having a few issues and needs retiring" (or words to that effect!)

Having checked the source of the fluid and embarked on a taste and sniff inspection I am now confused.

The fluid has not soaked the carpet, and seems to have slowly over time run down the crease/curve nearest the centre of the car and spread nearer the centre of the passenger footwell - it's only damp and not soaked and the fluid looks and feels like thin oil. It's producing oily residue when wiped off the carpet.

Having squeezed my 6'5" bulk into the footwells on both side and removed lower dash and the footwell venting I found the source - it appears to be coming through the part of the venting where the windscreen vent mechanism is and possibly from a hole missing a screw in the fan trunking, all behind the lowest part of the dash.

At the leak point it also and feels oily, and none of it tastes like coolant - yes I have compared!

I have had the car since dec last year, and have problems throughout the colder months with playing the delicate adjustment of heat and fan in order to be able to see but have always been able to produce very hot and cool air and this leak/carpet issue has only just come about in the last week. I haven't been using stupid amounts of coolant - it's my daily and the amount hasn't increased that much in the last few hot weeks.

Am I right in my initial assessment/tutting/swearing or could it be something else?
