red tint on crystal rears - reverse lights?

I have a set of clear crystal rear lights which i will be tinting red. If anyone has done this does the reverse light still shine white through the tint or is it better to leave an open square there? Or perhaps replace the bulbs with LEDs? Its only because i think the all reds look better than with the square left out.

I've got tiny slits cut into mine so the white shines through but you can't really see it normally so still looks good in daylight.
