advice and thoughts wanted on abf swap into 9a corrado

Right so I managed to pick up a 16v golf gti mk3 for cheap

as the engine wouldn't start. The way I saw it was worth far more in parts worst case scenario. As I really didn't pay a lot for it. It turns over with good compression so think it may be fuel pump an leads etc as it was last driven in 03.

Now if all runs well I was wondering if it was worth swapping as from the small amount of info I've found it seems to be a good engine an people say swap is easy but I've not found a guide or owt yet.

so what do people think? It will cost me nowt apart from the effort of doing it and maybe some service bits as whole car is there. Or is it not even worth the time.

Also are there folk on here who have done it as there thoughts would be great. I kinda liked the idea as it was keeping it period.

also any help would also be appreciated.

There's a couple of folk on here who have had mk3 engines in a Corrado, I don't think it's too bad a job if you have the complete donor car, a remapped mk3 16v gives very good power, nice engines

I would think it would be dead easy. Not sure if you may have an issue or two if your ABF has a factory immobiliser but even that could be defeated easily enough by an ecu specialist. Other than that plug and play.

sorry if iv missed something but whats your reasons for wanting an abf in your corrado? I had one in a mk2 golf that I swapped it was really good on fuel but its some what lacking in the power department,

Is the 9A broken? Or are you after a little bit more power and fancy a project?

 

I admit that replacing a tired 9A with a low mile ABF makes a lot of sense if you're handy with the spanners. I've just rebuilt a 9A and with hindsight I wouldn't go down the same route again (it cost quite a bit more than I originally anticipated with lots of consumables like con-rod bolts and gaskets).

 

There are some interesting threads over on ClubGti about 16v cam profiles. The 9A cams are pretty mild, some people on here are running 9A heads with KR and ABF cams to give the engine more of a top end. Swapping the ABF cams into the 9A head would be considerably less work.

 

It depends what you're trying to achieve.

This is a 90k engine so better than my 140k 9a

As for the 9a it works beautifully and I do have kr cams and a 50mm inlet to upgrade it.

But the abf was cheap . like you say I just wanted a newer engine with a bit more poke.

Be aware that the ABF is a bit taller (15 mm I think) than the 9A, and you may need to fettle your bonnet for it to fit. A good ABF will give at least 160, maybe 170 bhp with its dedicated management system so it is certainly a worthwhile swap. They are very robust and reliable, I have a B4 Passat with the ABF engine and it has done 250 thousand miles. I am just about to put on a rebuilt cylinder head because of valve guide/oil seal issues, but there are no bottom end concerns at all.

I put an ABF in my Corrado but it was originally a KR. I've kept Kjet too just for simplicity. It is a noticeable difference in power as well. I had no issues with bonnet clearance but I do have a late bonnet. I replaced every gasket and seal, the water pump, used all new bolts, done the cambelt, refurbished the alternator....think that was it! Either way I done it with very little knowledge and my drive in the snow last year :-)

 

As said above there is a guide on club gti, I found that really useful!!!
