Rear wheel bearings?

Recommended Posts

I think I've got worn wheel bearings in the rear wheels, but am looking for confirmation before spending a fortune again.

Car has developed a very low level whine from the rear end, most noticeable around 30-40mph. Jacking rear wheels up there is about 1-2mm of travel at top of the tyre if wobbled on a right angle to axis of car. Hard to describe but I hope some one will know what I mean.

I'll be a bit peed off with the VW stealers if they have gone, 'cause I've just spent £300 on a service a month ago!!

Cheers Supercharged, didn't realise they could be adjusted. Just done one of them and you where spot on. Got to do the other after work (Not driving the C).

Is this a sign the bearings are passed their best, or just a routine maintanence thing?

I think they must have just been or become a bit loose, as long as they spin with no real resistance they should be ok...

Usually when they go they get harder to turn and noisy as the bearing collapses and expands...

Remember there should be some play as the bearing will expand as it heats up.
