Mk2 Golf question... sorry!

Hi chaps

trying to change the brake discs on a Mk2 Golf driver and have fallen at the first hurdle. Trying to loosen the alan key that retains the calipers and I can't tell what size the alan key needs to be. I have a 6 and an 8 and cant find a 7 - Halfords didnt have any 7's in stock and didnt know what size it should be. :roll:

Anyone here know?? :)

I thought it was a 6? - Maybe buy some Allen sockets from halfords...

I think its a 7 alright. They can be hard to come by seperately. I had this problem last week putting brake pads in a mates fiesta. He said he had a set of allen keys but they didn't have a 7mm allen key. Couldn't find a 7 anywhere so had to go home for my own set! The best thing to do would be as Supercharged, said, buy a set of allen sockets. They are much better anyway....

It was in the end a 6 but they couldnt be undone because a previous garage had worn out the alan key heads and they were ruined. He took it to a garage and they persuaded them undone - all inside 2 hrs!! lol

Would be a good idea to just check the fixings that you had this garage sort out for you. The reason being, that the adopted method for releasing seized allen bolts in that type of calliper is to cut away the dust boot and turn out the bolts with stilson wrench of the appropriate size. I have then seen, after this kind of "fix", the old chewed bolts re-fitted with chopped up dust boots which in time then rust firmly into place making the next pad change even worse. You may indeed be pleased to find that they have fitted new bolts and dust boots, but all the same i would check because you know who is going to pick up the headache and the bill !!
