Loose cam belt?

Recommended Posts

Is the cam belt on a 16v self tensioning?

It looks a bit slack on my car. Would a loose belt cause my car to stall when I drop the clutch/idle badly?

Not very technically minded, but curious!

"looks a bit slack"? Can you define that?

It should be taut and there shouldn't be much movement with the "thumb test" either.

No.

Unless you've slipped a tooth on the belt, in which case it would potentially effect everything...

Just had a quick look. Looking straight down on it you can easily slide it left and right on the cog. Without removing the cover completely (I can only get my hand about 6" down the belt, not even half way) it twists about 45 degrees. I imagine if I tried half way down the belt it would twist 90 degrees.

Hmm. I hope whoever did your last cambelt replaced the tensioner pulley too...

I don't know the 16v engine very well, so I don't know exactly how much play to expect, but this doesn't really sound right to me..
