I second the mk1 Octavia, had one from new and still going well with 95000 miles on the clock. It is a brilliant car and does everything so well; such a workhorse and an excellent folly for the corrado. I've had mine chipped which gave it a new lease of life. Minor repairs during my ownership and; at the price you can pick them up, a steal. Granted the interior fabric is rubbish, but hey, the drive will make you smile
