My long going Mk2 VR6

Recommended Posts

So i know its not a corrado but as i post on here alot and the engines the same i thought i should post it up

Dont want you guys thinking i just sort out parts but have no clue about the car itself :-)

The stories goes : The car came into my possesion in 2005. I had a Mk2 1.3 at the time but wanted a VR6 conversion. I knew a 1.3 would be harder to put a conversion into and i wasnt using it so set about looking for another mk2 to work with. This one came up about 30 miles from home. It was originally black but had been painted in a BMW blue colour similar to the Audi bright blue that RS4s come in. It had a fully rebuild 2.0 GTI lump from a mk3 fitted which ran like a dream so the deal was done and it became mine.

I didnt run the car like this for too long, it went to my friend Patrick (sparksvr6) for a VR6 conversion. In this time it ended up having the bay smoothed and was away for 10 months. That went so slowly that time. I couldnt wait to drive it and driving a 1.4 TDI daily with no toy was killing me.

Once the car came back it was driven for around 6 months before deciding that i was going to go all out, strip the car and get it painted. We had had trouble matching the blue colour so it seemed a good thing to do. I went for black, its a suzuki GXSR black so has a slight flake in the sun when polished. Just wanted to be a bit different at the time. So it was engine back out, complete strip and off for paint. Once back from paint in black and looking all lovely it was rebuilt with alot of help and first made its debut at GTI International 2007 at Bruntingthorpe.

The car stayed like this for about 1.5-2 years before the engine was back out again. This time for a full rebuild, pistons, shells, everything. The engine issues discovered once taken apart were pretty nasty, the pistons would rock in the bores. So 2.9 it was bored out too and everything replaced. All the inlet manifold, alternator fuel rail etc was chromed before it was put back in.

It then stayed like this for a number of years before i took it off the road in 2012. The chrome in the bay had started to pit, it looked terrible and didnt want people to see it looking pants as i was unhappy with it. And there it has sat since. in the garage, but at least not rotting away outside.

So not finally i got the motivation to rebuild it. I had started to take a few small things apart over the 4-5 years its sat but it always seemed a huge task so i just put it off with other adulting duties taking over. Then my stepson started his driving lessons, his mate will now come over and they are out there learning about cars, taking them apart, detailing etc and its really cute. I thought damn they need to see a real car (they have a fiesta and a corsa) and it motivated me massively to get mine on the road as neither of them have seen it drive. So i got the engine stripped in a day to get the chrome stripped and re powdercoated and it didnt take that long. I then sent it off to Mike the polisher and within 2 weeks had everything back in black looking lovely. So now am in the rebuild stage with the usual things holding me up, items getting lost, things not come back from the polisher, generally trying to replace what i can on the car.

As it stands i am waiting on the splash panel from the rocker cover to come back so i can finish the build, my inlet manifold ports didnt survive stripping so have had to get another manifold coated as they are essential.

New coilovers and tyres arrived last week so i can get those on and my new adaptors are ordered. Slowly getting there. I am aiming for September now for getting it out, maybe to a show or 2 but when you are waiting on other people its tricky.

The paint wont be done this year as it needs some touch ups in places and a new tailgate. The rest of the car though is sold where it was freshly undersealed when it was painted luckily so no welding etc to be done.

The interior i am torn on, i cannot decide whether to put a rear bench back in, currently i dont have one and have a 90s old school les hicks roll cage which i do love.

I am sure some people will recognise the car from years ago possibly.

So it did look like

Stripped the rear wheel last night and got that in the air. Started to take apart and clean up the rear axle and surrounding parts. Its mega crusty but solid.

Anyway decided it would be easier to rebuild another axle off the car and just swap the 2 over when its done. so a smallish job turned into a massive one. I feel like if im going to do it i may as well do it properly.
