my 16v is jumping out of 1st gear as you move off sometimes and there is also a strange noise as I move off.it feels like it not going into 1st gear all the way.it only makes the noise in 1st gear and selects other gears fine.

Have a look around the forum for checking the gear selector linkages. This is the most likely problem. Failing that you may just have a badly worn 1st gear synchromesh.

Yes, I don't doubt it. Check the linkages first, then the gear lever at the base for play.

The selector tower on box has got major play in it.been told it could be this is it possible to buy a new one

Well that means that i'll have to get you a selector mechanism then..

I think its worth trying that before buying a box .have you got a good un 1990 16v
