predator 0 Posted August 18, 2004 my 2.9 vr6 has aloud knocking noise when its cold.The noise goes away when it warmed up, it sounds like piston slap has any body esle had this problem with their vr6,my car also needs a new set of tappets could this cause the piston slap.finally how long would the engine last for like this . Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 18, 2004 Mine's been slapping since 70,000 miles and is still doing it at 99K, but Vince of Stealth confirmed the bores and pistons were within tolerance when he rebuilt my head. He get's a lot of queries about VR's slapping and he always tells them the same thing - "Don't worry about it, most of them do it". And nobody knows the VR better than him.....in the UK at least. In rare cases, you can get a top end rattle from the cams if they're worn which sounds a bit like piston slap.
