Fairzy 0 Posted September 24, 2004 Would definately be interested in this mod. Any idea as to a total cost and a list of parts/work required? Is it a DIY job? Can you fit these behind speedlines... would be very nice if you could 8)
jedi-knight83 0 Posted September 24, 2004 Fairzy, you need at least 16" wheels for these 312mm brakes you can squeeze later mk3 golf 288mm behind the speedlines while is what i am doing.
Fairzy 0 Posted September 24, 2004 Will you notice a big difference? Is it just a straight swap and which pads do you use then? Ta
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 24, 2004 Yes you will notice a difference. A big difference in the case of the 312s, and a noticable, but not immense difference with the 288s. VW, aswell as it's customers found the 280 setup (same as G60) faded too easily on the VR due to the weight and faster top speed - kind of obvious really. 150mph sports car - Meagre Golf/Corraod brakes, hello? So anyway, they rectified this with much bigger pads and a revised caliper. The larger discs are a better heatsink and the bigger pads offer a harder grip and larger wipe surface area, meaning stronger, fade free retardation, well, better than the 280s anyway! Unfortunately the 288s only came about *after* the Corrado's demise, so it was too late for us.
Fairzy 0 Posted September 24, 2004 Thanks for that, what parts would I need for a conversion to the 288s and what kinda price am I looking at?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 24, 2004 Around £100 s/hand... maybe cheaper from a breakers. Most MK4s have the 288s as standard, so you could also pilfer it's rear calipers too, as per your other thread  98-on MK3s got them too. Parts required, Front - Caliper carriers, calipers, the appropriate discs and pads and MK2 to MK4 (Olive to Banjo joints) platform hoses. You can get these from Goodridge or nick the rubber ones off a MK4/98-on MK3. Used discs & pads are hit and miss, better to start a fresh with new VW metal and Pagid fast road pads. Rear - MK4 calipers, new discs (corrado), pagid pads and bearings, MK2 to MK4 hoses. You won't believe the transformation in stopping power with that lot. Fairzy 0 Posted September 25, 2004 What is the bearing required for the rear? Is there any other differences to changing the fronts - just swapping disks and pads?
Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 25, 2004 With the front hoses, just use Mk3 items.
