If you are doing it for the track . why not ditch the compensator and go with a manual bias valve they are not expensive .
-
I would be checking the radiator is not blocked at this point . if you have changed/checked the sensors ,thermostat and pump . From cold when you start it up how long does it take till it starts over heating at idle . You state that the expansion tank hose is very hot to touch but with no water in it . What about the other pipes . Is it pressurising ( pipes hard to squeeze ) .

Well the 99p steering rack didnt quite fit , but after some butchery and modification its spot on now . As i have removed the abs from the car i have been on the lookout for a non abs servo . Have you seen the price of these new . Cheapest i found was at gsf and they wanted £192 ,so with a new master cylinder you are knocking on the door of £250 . Bugger that ! . Got a Bias adjustable pedal box , with 2 master cylinders , remote bottles and remote adjuster £200 for the kit . Alright its not exactly as simple as just bolting OE stuff back in , but i am really impressed with what seems good value for money . I got the engine back in minus the manifolds as i still have a few fiddly things to deal with at the back of the engine . When i pulled the engine/gearbox out i noticed that one of the gearbox mounting lugs had snapped off . So i have fitted the spare gearbox that came with the car , heres hoping its a good un .

You dont have to take the timing belt off on a G60 although you do have to remove the supercharger and its mounting bracket to get to the water pump . It is mounted between the charger bracket and the block . :bonk: ignore that fact i have the timing belt off in this pic i was changing the crank seal , it gives you and idea how the water pump is mounted .

Wednesday managed to get chance to lay some black in the engine bay . Had another late night at the unit today . Got the engine finished . Its a long way off being fitted yet though . So ill chuck a sheet over it and wheel it into a corner for now . Relaid the wiring loom baack into the engine bay and fitted some of the ancillaries to the bulkhead .With obligatory pizza break of course . Managed to get a manual steering rack off ebay for 99p ! Bargain ! . So made a start on dropping the front subframe off to get the old one out to find one of the subframe bolts spinning in the chassis leg  . So i will have to open the chassis leg up to sort this out , as it was getting close to 10pm i decided to walk away rather than throwing a tantrum . See what tomorrow brings .

Nice work .

looks like you will be busy over winter . Very nice car .

As it turned out i had a quiet afternoon . Managed to get the welding repairs finished and also seam weld the turrets inside and out , and also stitch weld the chassis legs . A good coat of primer went on ,then plenty seam sealer , then more primer . Finally put the spray gun down at 22:30 and decided to call it a day . Well or so i thought . I was aware that this car had been involved in an accident at some point as it is a cat "c" . I knew that it had some repair work done to the front corners. But i wasnt expecting to have to do as much work to the front inner wings and castle rails . The previous repair was done to a reasonable standard but who ever did it, did a poor job of sealing it all and the old welds have rotted out . Its scary what seam sealer can hide ... ( fun ) . This isnt a problem as such it just slows progress while you remedy it . I took these pictures last week just after i started striping the front end out to get to the bulkhead . Most of the welding forward of the bulkhead has been done , i just havnt taken any new pics for a bit . The plan over the next few days is to finish off the welding get some paint on the engine bay and make sure the seams are sealed well .

So while i hunt for a decent displacer ( or save for a new one ) I thought i would continue with getting the shell prepped properly . So armed with an old joiners chisel i started stripping the sound deadening from the car . If you work fast it comes of in chips and doesn't take too long . If your are a bit too gentle it kinda peels off but leaves more behind . Found a cpl of old patches of welding that will need tidying up . A quick scrub with standard thinners ( cellulose ) and a reasonable clean floor . Also removed a few parts and keyed them up for paint . I feel a colour change coming on . It has to be a solid colour as i am sure that at some point ambition is gonna out-weigh my ability and i may end up painting it more frequently than i thought . any suggestions ?? Removed the sunroof frame and made a start on welding the sunroof back into the shell .

As i said it is the boost return butterfly . Some people remove the boost return pipe work . I have seen a few reasons why people do this .So that the oil spray from the crankcase breather does not directed through the supercharger and keeping charge temps down the hot air that has once been through the charger does not get directed through again . I have an elbow on mine pointing toward the bulkhead , just so if there is any oil present it doesnt get sprayed on to the exhaust manifold .
-
Looks like someone has removed the boost return pipework .
-
Not the best pic , but it looks like the boost return for the charger .

After working for schwitzer, scania and cummins/wartsila splitting a charger holds no fear for me . To be fair they are pretty basic mechanism's just fiddly . What sort of boost should i be seeing on a modified ported charger ? . Their are a few pits on the contact surface of the displacer which i imagine are letting air get under the seals and its looking very worn . So i am on the lookout for a displacer that is in better condition than mine .

Had a quiet afternoon at work today . So i finalised the wiring for the emerald ecu . A good few hours sat with the soldering iron . Then a hour with the laptop and shes running ! I didnt have time to go any further with it today as hunger struck and it was getting late . If i get chance tomorrow I intend to finish wrapping the wiring loom and get everything put back together . Then i can run her up to temp and spend a bit more time on it .

Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to the nuances of language " worthless " is not a word I would of used . No matter . Feel free to peruse pics of my car I started a build thread in march . http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?t=85666

Am I alone in thinking that's a bit harsh ! Glad to hear you and the missus have got a new toy . As they say those that play together stay together .

Had a really close shave friday on my way to work . I had noticed that the car was a bit hesitant and lacking in power so i nursed it to work . As i was opening the gate I heard an unhealthy rattle from the engine . So switched it off and pushed her the rest of the way into the yard . The bottom pulley bolt had worked loose . Joy . So stripped it all down to find the timing had jumped 1 tooth . New bolt ( lots of threadlock ) New belt and a compression test later she is running again . Lucky escape . I had already decided before i arrived that day that i was gonna to have a look at the state of the charger internals . I have only been getting 10-11psi with a 68mm pulley . It reaches 10psi by 3000rpm and just kinda holds fluctuating between 10--11 . So after splitting the charger i have found that the bearings and oil seals are all fine but the apex seals or some of them are stuck in their grooves . Time for a rebuild . By the time i am finished i will either have a fantastic car or be bankrupt .... havnt decided yet .

Thanks guys. Well had the rado on the road about a week now but shes fighting me every step of the way . First was the realisation that 3 of the coilovers were leaking so a mad panic to get some temporary replacements . Then this morning i came out ready to set off the work the find a large damp patch under the car . Leaking water pump . The joys of trying to run these older cars . So spent most of the afternoon sorting out the car . While it was stripped so far i fitted a new crankshaft oil seal as it had been weeping a little . Shiny new water pump .. Shes flying high now on standard springs / shocks ... No points in the stance but its damn comfy . On a lighter note we have 2 lodgers at the workshop . My business partner was struggling to find a home for a pair of kittens . So we got a pair of ship's cats . The Workshop is right down on the canal side . So there are some pretty big rats floating about that keep stealing anything you leave out . These fluffy lil assassin's should deal with Roland when they get a bit bigger .

So one drunken friday evening i spent a while shopping on ebay . I must have been pretty drunk, when the set of window switches i ordered turned up they were early spec ones . In my defence the auction didnt state what spec they were but if i had looked at the pics properly .........:bonk::bonk: So am after a late spec Dbl window switch ( drivers side ) . And some early spec switches are up for grabs if anyone needs any .

Well my coilovers have had it . 3 of them are leaking and have no damping effect anymore . Its like trying to drive a high speed pogo stick . I will be getting some new ones at the beginning of september , so i am after a set of dampers and some springs .l Dont care if they are oe or aftermarket as long as they are cheap and will last a cpl months .

I would advise against a traders policy for private use . I often have to submit invoices to my insurance company to prove that i am trading . Also traders policies dont like cars over 25 years , Imports / lhd , Kit cars etc etc . As some of the guys have already said your best option would be a classic policy .

The last few weeks i have been getting more and more annoyed with my daily . Which is a plastic pig ( renault espace ) .So i decided to put a couple front seats back in the rado and put a bit of tax on her . Gave her , her first wash whilst being in my possession . She dont scrub up bad in fairness . Proceeded down to the post office and handed over a pile of her majesties finest and received a tax disc . A further £20 in super and a good evening was had , well it put a smile on my face for a few hours . Work has also started on fitting or making them fit ,the pair of sparco's i picked up cheap . One of the neighbours has a couple scrap vectras outside so i pinched ( with permission ) a pair of front seat subframes . After some butchering with the grinder we are left with a useable pair of seat runners . need to invest in some side mounts now . Or i may try make some as we have a sheet of 3mm steel floating around .

Decided i didnt like/dont want the twin filter setup that was on the car . So after a bit of head scratching i decided to remove the boost return pipework again and i have decided to try one of the paper cone filters . This is it mocked up for now . Need to get a larger inlet flange and do a bit more trimming on the heat shield .

Having owned quite a few BMW's and alpinas I can vouch that they are fantastic drivers cars they come with their own collection of problems . The M division and alpina cars are expensive to maintain and repair , just enquire with a specialist what an inspection. 2 service costs and having the solid lifters adjusted . Some of the 2l And 3l diesel engines have a bad habit of swallowing the swirl flaps out of the Inlet manifold which usually makes a hell of a mess . Don't the ego's have a common issue with crank walk . Personally I would charge your car and give the drivers of the cars mentioned a surprise .
