  1. no mate, it drove absolutely fine, didnt seem to have affected it at all.... (BTW thanks for taking the time to reply here...) :)
  2. Yup, it had lost quite a bit of oil mate. Was just above the minimum.
  3. Looked like engine oil, was black - but then i probably wouldnt be able to tell! I certainly THINK it was engine oil...
  4. "oil under the car from the gearbox" How would i tell mate? Basically i could see a trickle of oil coming out from around that rubber bung on top of the gearbox and all of the top of the gearbox (and subsequently the bottom!) was covered in oil!
  5. Cheers mate. Its going in Autotrader the moment its in a sellable state. After 3 weeks of Corrado ownership im throwing in the towel. Ive had more niggly problems in 3 weeks than i had in a year of Golf GTI ownership and now this has happened - ive lost faith in the car and even though it will most likely be a pukka motor when its fixed, im going to get rid and get something cheap, slow and hopefully reliable. thanks for you help mate! Dave
  6. Hey guys, I went to Cornwall for the weekend - and on the way back, i got as far as Exeter (about 70 miles from home) when i heard a *thump* noise and the car shook slightly, and then i could hear a grinding noise when i accelerated. the grinding soon disappeared, but when i pulled over, there was oil pissing out of the little rubber bung on top of the gearbox (look directly under the dizzy cap, you should see a rubber bung - if you pull it out youll see the flywheel). I managed to get the car to a garage (about 5 miles) and called my breakdown cover. Whilst i was waiting (took them 2 hours!) i asked a Golf GTI owner if i could see his engine (to see if it was the same as mine) and it turned out he was a mechanic - he reckons my Crankshaft Seal has popped and as a result its splattering oil everywhere. He says at the very least the gearbox will need to be removed, at most its an engine out job. Hopefully the gearbox isnt damaged (still had all the gears) and also i hope no oil got on the clutch as ill need a new one of them too if thats happened! The car didnt run out of oil, so hopefully ive not done any damage there. In the end i got brought home on the back of a flatbed - was a bloody nightmare getting the car onto it, various bits kept scraping as its so low! God knows what im gonna do about it, im skint! Anyone got any encouraging words or advice as to what its likely to be? Cheers chaps (and chapesses!) Dave oh, and btw, the idling problem got worse over the weekend - didnt want to idle even when warm. Problem disappeared when the seal blew (or whatever it is!)
  7. Wow - very good of you mate, thanks very much. Ill go out and twat it with a big hammer and see if it makes a difference ;) eheh
  8. Im 21, with a Corrado 1.8 16v. Got my first 'performance' car about 18 months ago - a Pug 205 GTI 1.6, kept it for 6 months and then sold it and bought a Mk2 Golf GTI 8v, kept that almost a year and then sold it for my current Corrado that i got 3 weeks ago. All 3 can be seen here: http://www.evoposters.net/cars/davescars
  9. Nice one mate, thanks a lot! Ill check all the pipes over and try cleaning it - ive got next week off, so hopefully i can sort a few of my niggles out!
  10. What does that look like mate? Anyone got a piccie? Cheers chaps - much much appreciated!
  11. Thanks Kev. Mine now seems to idle nicely - i took it for a damn good hour long thrash last night and it seems to have done it the world of good! Im still going to check all of my hoses tho, just to be on the same side. Also, it needs a light throttle to start it in the morning, when it should start without throttle... Cheers mate. Dave
  12. Thanks guys. i did pull the airbox about the other day, so i suspect ive dislodged something! I took teh car for a damn good thrashing last night (90 in 3rd, 110 in 4th etc) and ran it for an hour, got it nice and warm. This morning it idled perfectly - but i still had to give it a light throttle to start it. Ill have a look under the airbox today and see what i can break... i mean fix ;) As for plugs - i tried to take one out last night to check it, and i couldnt get my spark plug socket in the hole! My socket was too big for the hole (oo-er!) :)
  13. Exactly how mine are! Apparently all Corrado's will only operate one window at once. As an almost-related-point, yesterday i locked my car with both windows and the sunroof open (god knows why...) and i accidentally held the key turned longer than necessary - and by jove, first my passenger window went up, then my drivers window! Sunroof stayed open, so presumably that part of 'total closure' is broken - so presumably i have 'almost-total-closure' or 'partial closure' or something ;)
  14. cheers chaps. Ill have to get it checked out - fuel economy is good tho, so its not running rich! The cars previous owner has told me im getting problems because i do so many short trips (i live a 2minute drive from work, so i should walk reall!) and he says its never getting warmed up as even when i drive to my girlfriends, its only a 15minute drive. He reckons a good thrash will do it the world of good!
  15. Cheers mate - i find if i dont give it some throttle when i start, it takes longer to catch and when it does start it stalls immediately - if i start it with some throttle its usually ok! Just taken it out for a drive and its running fine. Ill see how i get on. In the meantime, does anyone else have any more light to shed? Cheers! Dave
  16. sky? AAV? ISV? Cheers for the replies chaps! ;) BTW i know bugger all about Corrado engines (and not much about any other engines actually!) - ive only had the bloody thing 3 weeks!
  17. Hi all, I parked my Corrado 1.8 16v in my driveway last night and all was well - but when i started her up this morning, she stalled every time i took my foot off the throttle! The revs just dropped away to nothing and the car stalled. This may have been because i tried to start her whilst it was in gear (forgot to knock it out of gear! doh!) , ie, so it didnt start - do you think it could have flooded it or something? (i always depress the throttle a little when i start the car). I managed to drive it for a minute or two and after that it ran like a dream, just as normal. Im wondering if maybe there was a problem with the automatic 'choke' type thing? Just a little worried as i need to drive the car 250 miles to Cornwall this weekend (and back again with any luck! lol) and im worried ill damage it. Its always started before, not too keenly when cold, you need to give it some throttle and the starter turns for a few seconds before it actually catches and starts - but its never stalled every time i lift off the throttle before! What could this be? Will i damage her if i drive her? Cheers in anticipation guys! Dave
  18. Wheres this vacuum hose? Mine exhibited the same symptoms this morning! Cheers Dave
  19. Im a Graphic/Web Designer, working for a small Charity based in sunny Wiltshire (http://www.hopeandhomes.org) Its nice to work somewhere where you know the boss isnt making a wedge from your efforts ;)
  20. you mean the profile? or the width? Im only getting them because i can get 4 cheap! Im not too bothered how they look, i just need two new tyres! :)
  21. UPDATE: they do indeed have '6Jx15' written under the centre cap. Will 205x50R15's fit? As a chappie above says they need to be at least 6.5J!
  22. Cheers mate - i still think ill avoid playing with the PAS bits ;) I tried changing the Alternator belt on the Corrado yesterday - loosened alterator, moved it and took belt off the alternator pulley - but the belt wouldnt come away at the bottom of the engine - looks like its caught around the power steering pulleys etc - do you have to remove half the PAS gubbins to get the alternator belt off?!!? Seems a little daft if thats the case! Cheers Dave
  23. Just to add to these comments - my Golf GTI 8v had a really annoying rattle between 2500rpm and 3k - it was indeed the heatshield on the downpipe - me and a mate got the car on ramps and put a couple of long bolts in it (it should have 3 as standard, but they tend to fall off - 2 of mine had!) and it pretty much cured the problem! Hope this helps Dave
  24. Cheers chap - ill have a looksie :) BTW, well impressed with the 'atmos' on this forum - very helpful friendly people - i think i may become a regular :) Cheers Dave
  25. Update chaps :) Yesterday i sprayed some WD40 style stuff on the Alternator belt - it shut it right up! The PAS belt is still making a bit of a whining noise, but its a LOT LOT better - seems that the main culprit is the Alternator belt. Ive rung the stealer and they want £4.20+vat for a new belt so ill fit one on Sunday. Talking of pulleys - looks like i have two side by side at the bottom of the engine. Arse. Looks like ill leave the PAS belt for a while! Thanks for all your help chaps - ill let you know how i get on! :) Dave
