  1. LOL really?! Ill try spraying some on my belts. I might try some GT85 actually - its bicycle chain lube, has some kind of lubricant in it rather than just drying off!
  2. i dont quite know what you mean about a viscous coupling thingymabob! Ive had the cambelt tension checked, apparently its ok. The mechanic told me that the PAS belt was really old and was whining as well as the cambelt. He said that he sprayed 'belt dressing' (Halfords have never heard of this stuff?) on it and it stopped whining - but as it dried out again its started to whine again. If this viscous coupling thingy is brittle, would i be better off getting a garage to fit the PAS belt? Also, can this coupling thing be bought cheaply from Eurocarparts, and if so, would it be advisable to replace it whilst in there? Cheers again guys - i really appreciate all this advice! Ta! Dave
  3. Cheers chaps! How will i know if theyre 6.5J wide? ta! Dave
  4. Hi guys, Ive got some of those multispoke Sebring alloys on my Corrado 1.8 16v ('90 G plate) and ive been offered a set of 205 50 R15 tyres - will these fit on a)the wheels and b)the car without any problems? Cheers guys Dave
  5. Well it was in the garage the other day to get the cambelt tension adjusted - mechanic also sprayed something on the PAS and alternator belts and it went silent - until they dried out! lol Thanks for the help mate, much appreciated - i actually HAD a Haynes Golf manual as my last car was a Mk2 8v Golf GTI - but i STUPIDLY gave the manual away when i sold teh car! DOH!
  6. Hi all. Ive just bought an '89 1.8 16v and its been making an awful whining noise. The garage have readjusted the cambelt tensioner, which has improved it, but the mechanic reckons that my power steering belt etc is really old and dried out. he said when he spray Belt Dressing on it, it shut it up - but the sound has come back after a day or two. Im guessing an alternator belt is really easy (undo bolt, slacken off Alternator, remove belt, refit new one, tighten and rebolt?) but how the hell do i do the other belt(s)? There seems to be a couple down there! I definately need to do the PAS belt as i can hear it whine when i turn the wheel when stationary! What are all the other belts (apart from the Timing/Cam belt) and how the hell do i change them? Also bear in mind im about as mechanically minded as your average Hamster ;) Cheers guys Dave
  7. Most signwriters etc can do it - a mate of mine works for Signs in Motion in Salisbury - they have a machine that can do it. Ring and ask for Simon, tell him Dave from With4Wheels sent ya - he might give you a discount ;)
  8. Ive had the car up on ramps, and the exhaust isnt hanging off at all! Its been welded more than once, and its got a couple of small holes - but its far from falling off! I dont know which crossmember it is - garage told me it holds the bodywork together and its welded in, but ive spoken to a mate who said theres two there - one minor one thats NOT structural and is bolted in and a MAJOR one thats welded and supports the engine! I think the garage is taking me for a mug TBH - he quoted me £95 to supply and fit rear pads - local VW specialist want £52+vat for the same job! Im tempted to do the pads myself, but i dont want to cock it up! Plus, by the time ive bought the tool and pads etc, id just as well get it done! Cheers for all the help guys! Dave
  9. CHeers mate. Ive been told by my local VW specialists that its not a job i should attempt as you have to set it all up again afterwards - how true is this? Should i have a crack at it myself or not?! Ta! Dave
  10. Anyone got GPC's number?
  11. Cheers guys. Is it a difficult job? is the tool expensive?
  12. Hey all, im new here - just bought a Corrado 16v (can be seen here: http://www.evoposters.net/cars/davescars -i sold the immaculate black Golf to buy it!) Ive found a few problems with it since i bought it last weekend tho - apparently the front cross member is really rusty and ideally needs a new one welded in and also apparently the exhaust middle boxes are covered in past welds! It also needs rear pads (easy to change?) and two new tyres. Ho hum! luckily my girlfriends Dad is a welder so hopefully he can assist! Also it might just be the garage being melodramatic! Anyway, just wanted to say Hi! :)
