  1. im not 100% sure they exactly the same ecu, but i dont know why they would be different. it only controls the spark. what i did was get someone who had a barrel-load of spares and went thru the old trial and error technique to find what the problem was. i think the other ecu i had was a golf. i was just lucky i knew someone with all the spares!!
  2. haha. sorted. had repaired the heat shield at base of downpipe. was toching exhaust, and emitting a high pitched squeal. must have been justthe right frequency at them revs. bent it away with screwdriver
  3. hi. i had a similar problem. didnt happen while driving though. it started when my dizzy fell apart. bought a new one. fitted it. wouldnt start. spent an age tracing that fault, then realised i was getting no fuel! fuel distributor had packed in at same time . no pressure at the bolts on top of fuel distributor, or coming out of injectors while cranking. coincedence i think. totally seperate systems though. repaired it all myself and im no genius!
  4. sounds like its the other side of engine block tho. will have a gander in morning anyway. cheers. :thumb right:
  5. hi. anybody got a clue what this could be. in any gear (or neutral), accelerating or holding same throttle, when my engine reaches 3750rpm, something is squealing from somewhere below the car, down back of downpipe, or gearbox area. when driving with the windows up it sounds ike its a brake type squeal, but it does it when stationary and you rev it! if i dont rev it high its fine, but as its a 1.8 valver i sometimes need to! just hopin its nothing serious starting. any ideas would be nice so i can sort it. cheers
  6. is it possible for the brake compensator device to cause the rear brakes to slightly engage when the car is moving? as i said in the squeaky squeaky i hear a brake type squeal, from the rear, but only under acceleration in 1st and 2nd. i notice that now my coilovers have been on a week, they have bedded in and the back is a tad lower than the front. i will wind them up a cm or so to get the slight nose down stance right. someone suggested the compensator as the rear end is lower, and when i accelerate it tips back a toch more if you get my drift? but not sure if this is the case. please help as the noise is annoying  cheers :)

    squeaky squeaky

had my rear coilovers fitted last week. fk highsports. (still waiting for 1 front strut!! ) excellent ride and handling now by the way! but now i have a problem. only a little one. as far as i know nothing else was disturbed, and the ride height is only about 1 cm lower than b4 coilies (just wanted more room for tweaking), but now when i accelerate hard in 1st or 2nd, i can hear something squeal, like brakes do when the pads are worn. this sound familiar to anyone?could it be something disturbed while fitting coilies? or just coincedence. and why only in 1st and 2nd? :?: its a 1990 16v by the way. any help would be appreciated. cheers. :)
  8. thank god i found this thread. had stripped dash down tonight ready to remove it fully as my matrix dumped hot water on my ankles this morning! :shocked!: that woke me up i can tell you! hope it all goes as smoothly as some of yours have ! :)
  9. yea the guy at local vw specialist suggested that. found the flxible pipe and rusted off bracket from the back of manifold resting on the down pipe b4! but removed this and it still rattles. will get my exhaust geezer to get it on the ramp.
  10. hi there. my 1.8 valver has developed a slight rattle on idle. like some thing is loose behind the engine, down the bottom somewhere. if i touch the accelerator even a tiny amount it goes away, and i fine when driving. could this be heatshields?? are they able to be removed or is that asking for trouble? also what is the large one that comes down from the firewall to the exhaust maifold for? that is flapping around, seems to have broken loose. but that doesnt stop the rattle no matter what i do with it. can that one be removed safely?? any help please would be appreciated. thanks!!
  11. id get a 1.8. my mate had a 2litre, but felt so flat compared to my 1.8. didnt seem to have any excitement in it. like bananawhip says, keep it in the powerband and it does everythin you need. and its so simple without cat etc.
  12. i have hit 135 + twice. once with 3 scared passengers. was on 17's then. it was still accelerating, slowly! wouldnt ever imagine it creepin to 160 tho.
  13. i know its probably been covered 50million times. but how easy is this conversion. and what prices have people managed to do this for? i am in no rush as my valver flies and runs bang on, but it has done 160k and i know it aint gonna last forever. i aint bothered about a trillion bhp, as my car is used like a van most days, so needs be reliable. but when it aint would like a bit of fun. any special parts to look out for, maybe buying bits when i see them? any help and advice would be appreciated cheers.
  14. sounds like a problem i had with mine, only in reverse. my distributor fell apart. changed it. wouldnt start. spent next week changing every part of ignition system, only to realise my fuel distributor had magically died. anything is possible. borrow a coil off somone and try it.
  15. as i look at the distributor on a 16v, starting top left and goin anti clockwise, what order are the plug leads. been told 2 different! also the dam mixture screw ontop of airbox. which way is richer, which is leaner??? any help. cheers!
  16. anybody fitted weber or dellorto twin carbs on their 16v rado? having nothing but trouble with my injection at mo. wont run. either no fuel coming through. or floods the plugs in optimax! fancy a bit of change. what size are best? they easy to live with? any advice please. cheers!
  17. yes that pipe is connected. i know all about that pipe from previos none starts! we tried lifting the metering flap b4 i changed all the stuff over. will give that another try when my battery is full of juice.
  18. hi folks. can anyone offer advice. 10 days ago i went to change dizzy cap. dizzy fell to bits. i buy a new one. car wont start. turns over but wont catch. i presume dizzy is duff. but i now have a spark. so thats fine. but still wont start. fuel is coming in to the fuel distributor thing ontop of airbox, going out to warm up regulator, coming back to fuel distributor thing. there is pressure at this end of the injector pipes, but nothing comes out of the injectors, when engine turned. i even swapped the whole lot over with borrowed parts, but still the same! doesnt even get near firing up. just a pop every few seconds of turning over (5th injector?). why has this happenned since i change dizzy?? (it ran fine b4, just wanted to change cap as it misfired a bit in traffic) i have checked all vacuum and air pipes. all ok. if anyone can help please reply! thanks.
  19. i marked the dizzy so its in same spot as old one was. battery is near new. the none start happened the second i changed the dizzy over.
  20. can anyone suggest the cause of my problem. i have a 1990 1.8 16v. has been perfect since i bought it 2 years ago. in the last few weeks it has started to kangaroo while in traffic. i thought maybe it could do with new dizzy cap for starters. i took the cap off, and the hall sender connection crumbled out in pieces. so i borrow another distributor. wont start. turns but wont fire up. i bought new bosch distributor. fitted it. wont start. same as b4. i have checked across hall sender plug and there is 10v coming through. what do i try next?? i can borrow an ecu to check that. i will try new coil and ht lead too. anything else i need to check? any help would be appreciated!! cheers!
  21. hi there people. any ideas of good body shops in the north, preferably north west, who know there corrados? some nib has dropped somethin on my rear panel, creasing it. its not too noticable but you know what its like! all the other bits i could live with, like the pink roof, the faded spoiler, the crazy paving laquer on the front bumper, the rotting door edge, the battered back arch (too low, too wide!) , all of which can be kept ontop of with a bit of effort. but this has sent me over the edge! i just want a good quality respray and removal of the little dings, no mods. nothin that costs 1000's though, if thats possible! it is my daily driver. no doubt it will happen again! any help would be appreciated! thanks
