Ordered a (silver) 'Corrado' badge from my local vee-dub dealer earlier in the week. I quoted the part number from my badge - 535 853 687. Dealer called today to say that the part has been recently discontinued. Anybody know if this is true, and if so, where I might track one down from?? thanks, Dave.

I am having I new windscreen fitted to my car next week, and just wondered which trim parts need removing before the fitter can do his thing. I'm working on the basis that the easier I make the screen swap the better job I will get. I have already removed the three black covers at the bottem of the screen, as well as the blower motor water cover thingy. Do the interior A-pillar trims need to come out?? I hope not as this will mean diturbing the alarm sensors, and I hate disturbing anything that is working properly. Also, there are three black plastic pieces bonded to the outside of the screen, two channel type moldings (one down each pillar), and one across the top. (These not to be confused with the other molding that runs around the outside of the whole lot). Are these three bonded parts replaced by the screen fitter, or do they just remove them from the old screen and glue them to the new one? If they try and re-use the parts, I think will just order new ones myself. Any comments from people who have had their screens changed? Fingers crossed for a new screen with no leaks....

Firstly, thanks to all who replied to my previous post, particulary daves16v who pointed me in the right direction. Breifly, my problem was that the vertical adjustment mechanism on the steering column would not hold the wheel securely, so that there was some vertical 'play' in the column. All other positions appeared to be OK - i.e. wheel held firmly in position. My local VW dealership refused to drive the car, stating that it was unsafe. They even made we sign a waiver before they released it! They had spent 15 minutes looking for the problem at the last MOT, with no joy. This time all they wanted to do was quote for a new column £500+VAT+fitting. Nice. Anyway, with the help of the forum, this is how I fixed it; (Apologies for the crap pictures - had to use my phone) (Also apologies for the post - never tried to post pictures before  )

Just removed my ABS controller - contacts very 'blue' and corroded. Hopefully removing the corrosion will sort the problem. Now I just need to play that great game we all know as 'chase the leak'! P.S. If the ABS controller is knackered, how much for a replacement??

Steering problem - Possible MOT failure?? - Please help!!
daveh replied to daveh's topic in Drivetrain
Thanks Dave. I've just popped out and had a quick look - too dark to see - will try again tomorrow. The mechanism looks quite complicated, from what I remember from yesterdays swearing session with my car. It appears to have one locking pin (and corresponding rack) for positions 1 and 3, and a whole duplicate assembly for possitions 2 and 4. Very strange. I'm hoping that I might be able to swap the parts over, so that my setting is repaired. In the mean time, I will start looking for my biggest hammer............'Just a little tap' you say! -
Thanks for the info.... Yet another thing to look at on my car. Why oh why does it run perfectly for months (or even years), and then eveything turns to s**t at the same time. Anyway, rant over.... New magnex exhaust arives this week. Can't wait!!

Steering problem - Possible MOT failure?? - Please help!!

I think I might have a closer look at the column myself. Does anyone know of a good workshop manual for the Corrado? I looked on the Haynes website - Scirroco and Golf listed, but no Corrado!! -
Hi guys, Would like to check my ABS controller. Where abouts is it?? Dave.

Steering problem - Possible MOT failure?? - Please help!!

Thanks for the info. I've got 6 months until the MOT is up again, but as the problem seems to be getting worse I was hoping to fix it before then. The really annoying thing is the the column is perfect on the other height settings (mainly because they have never been used) but the wheel has vertical slack on my setting. Coupled with the fact that the driving position is uncomfortable in any other position means I might be screwed :x . The only thought I have have is to weld a small plate (steel: approx 1 x 4cm) to bridge the gap between the two steering column sections, beneath where the height adjustment hinge is. This would mean my column is then fixed (ie non-adjustable) but should be safe to drive. Any thoughts?? Dave. P.S. I've had the lower column cover off (three x-head screws and pull gently), and the two parts I want to weld together appear to be a cast alloy of some sort. Any ideas about welding to these?? -
uneven acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear, kangarooing motion
daveh replied to Jay_vr6's topic in Engine Bay
My Corrado (16v) had running problems, which can be more noticable in the lower gears where the cars low momentum doesn't smooth things out. Other symptoms (for me) included. Problems starting. Engine occaisionally cut out. Revs die really low before recovering. Flat spot. Eventually traced to a dodgey distributor. Might be worth checking yours out. Dave. -
Steering problem - Possible MOT failure?? - Please help!!
daveh replied to daveh's topic in Drivetrain
Doesn't move about of its own accord, but I can move the wheel up and down a little as I drive. Usually gravity ensures that it is at the 'bottom' of its range, but I guess bumps can cause the wheel to move as well (but they would have to be quite big). Out of the four height positions, the three I don't use hold the wheel very tight. Unfortunately the one I want to use has some slack in it, meaning I can move the wheel a little even though the height adjuster is 'locked'. Apologies, difficult to explain. Please let me know if I need to have another go. -

Forgot to mention. VW also added (helpfully) that if it gets any worse, they will fail the MOT. Nice. Dave. -
Howdy all, New to the site, but not new to Corrado's. I've had my 2.0 16v for nearly six years and I still love it. Unfortunately, I'm experiencing a problem or two as the miles increase - hopefully someone can help. My steering wheel can move up and down (not much, but very noticable) even though it is locked by the adjuster. In other words, when I use my normal wheel height setting, there is play in the mechanism up and down. But when I use a different wheel height, it locks rock solid. VW noticed this at the last MOT and said that is was a known fault, aparently made worse by the fact that I am responsible for over 80% of my cars mileage (they said I had 'worn out' my setting on the wheel adjustment). Please help!!! Replacing the steering column is VERY expensive. Does anybody know of a fix?? Many thanks, Dave. P.S. Wish I'd found this site earlier! Great info and very freindly - Hope I can contribute in due course.

Please don't laugh...... where do I look to check this  ??

Had exactly the same problems with my 2.0 16v. My car had a flat spot, difficult to start, as well as the revs dropping sharply and the engine somtimes cutting out. New distributor sorted it though.

I have had exactly the same problem with my 16v. When I got the car (at 23k miles and many moons ago) it had a slight flat spot very occaisionally. However, as the years passed it got more and more frequent until I had to do something about it. In the end I had trouble starting once a week, as well as a BIG flat spot. But as it was an intermittant fault, difficult to trace. VW checked the ECU - all OK. They guessed it was the distributor, but couldn't guarantee that would fix the problem. In the end, desparation drove me to replacing it........ and it worked!! Starts first time and no flat spot at all. Might be worth a punt yourself?? Hope this helps.
