Ive nearly got my charger off after two evenings pissing about on the drive..... Today I removed the pipe between the SC and the IC it was full of various shards of metal ranging between glitter sized bits up to 50p size. It was the same in the plastic outlet housing. The only good bit of news was that the IC to inlet manifold was completely clean, no 'glitter' or anything. I think this means I have had a really lucky escape and havent scored up my cylinders/pistons. I obviously need to clean out the IC but given my (very) limited mechanical skills I was hoping to avoid removing it as it appears to be in a pig of a place to get to. I have been considering just getting the car running so that I can get down to my work and use the air line to blow out the IC (from engine side to SC side). This is my best idea, does anyone have a better one? Apart from this I'm planning on pretty much following potatonets instructions, although maybe with a little more duck tape and a little less ducting! I didnt manage to get a 6 rib belt, halfords (it was free!) only had a 4 rib one in that length, but I figure that as I'm only using the belt as a temporary fix to drive my altenator it wont be too critical. Im guessing that a 6 rib belt was required originally as it was driving the SC and the altenator. Im guessing now that the energy of turning the SC has been removed a 4 rib should have enough purchase. Anyway, thats where I'm up to, If anyone has any suggestions, or wants to shoot my theories down feel free......

End of day one without a charger..........and I'm going to the pub! As Gav will confirm I've all the mechanical aptitude of a (not very) trained monkey and its taken me all evening since I got back from work to remove the altenator.....nearly. I reckon I'd have a new charger here by the time I've managed to get this old one off if I order one...

If you dont mind me asking....why have you had to buy 5 chargers?? Have you had any fail? Dan

Oh yeah, a couple of other things that I keep forgetting to ask due to being very pished off. 1) I take it I'm not supposed to drive it :? Am I right in saying that bits of the supercharger can end up in the engine? I accidentally did about 20 miles with it knackered. It was still pretty spritely, so I just put the noise down to my wobbly exhaust - I presumed that you would get all kinds of misfire etc with a charger blow. 2) Is it easy/cheap to convert the car to N/A for the immidiate future until I've sourced a new G lader. It's my only form of transport and could do with it running before payday! Dan

T'was a Jabba 'stage 4' but I was running a standard chip, pully, air intake etc....everything was completely standard. I think the Jabba Warranty was 1 year (6 months if you fit it yourself) It's making me wish I'd have gone for some very long drives in the 1st yeat just to get my monies worth!!! I do quite a lot of motorway miles which I've heard can be quite bad for the bearings, but generally I'd like to think I drive pretty sensibly unless she's properly warmeed up. Im just a bit dissapointed cause I was under the impression that it should be good for 50,000 before blowing up......not 26,000! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/G60-G-60-Supercha ... dZViewItem Anyone ever used these people on ebay? or does anyone have a charger for sale?? Grrrrr I'm pi$$ed off!! Dan

Just driving home on the M61 tonight and the car develops a funny noise. Could it be the charger.......? of course not, it'd be making more noise than this and I wouldnt still be sitting at 95mph.......must be the exhaust blowing......I'll check it out later.... Got home, popped the bonnet, a textbook G60 failure (if there is such a thing) Hopefully my picture has worked..... Note the Jabbasport sticker! I'm looking for the receipt to confirm but it was deffinitely overhauled 2 years ago (less than 30K).....I was hoping for a bit more longivity than that! What do I do now? It is worth mentioning I am completely skint and cant afford a bahn bremmer before some wise ass suggests it!! Gav, what was this cheap turbo kit you were telling me about? Dan

G60Jet - I see what you are getting at here......My G60 did exactly the same when my mobile phone was on the dashboard. Turned out it was the interference from the handset. Phone in pocket = no problems.

Just to keep you all informed, I contacted a place called General Motors in stockport today (from the recomended suppliers section of the forum). They asked about my symptoms and then the mileage and said they didnt want to get involved! Apparently it would be more trouble than it was worth. Brilliant customer service! They gave me the numebr of another place in Stockport who specialise in emissions / fuel system / electronical problems. Im off there on Monday to see what they can diagnose. I might try and disconnect the lambda probe tomorrow and see if that makes an improvement. Gavin, Lunchtime would be good for me anytime this week. I'll keep you informed and if I cant anywhere Monday I think it will be time to see a real expert.... The only good thing to come of all this is that I've managed to smoke an M3 convertible at the lights......and I mean literaly smoke. The poor guy pulled up behind me at some lights and looked like he could hardly breath as I left my calling card behind!! Dan

Cheers, that would be really useful.....assuming that it lasts til next tuesday without blowing up or something! is it safe to drive? I work about 5 miles away from the airport, is there some kind of meet on there or is that just where you work? Thanks, Dan

Help..... In the last couple of days my G60 has started smoking severely. Mainly when the engine is revevd above 3000 revs or when you lift off the accelerator. The smoke is black, in fact its sooty. The rear end of the car and exhaust is covered in soot. If I pull off from the lights there is a cloud of smoke left behind bigger than the car! The engine has gone a little hesitant as well (just like on an old fasioned car that needs more/less choke-best way I can describe it) A bit of history: The MPG went really low last week and the engine went a bit hesitant. Discovered a wire from the lambda sensor had become disconected. Reconected it and all appeared fine. now this...... Any help appreciated. Also, this is sounding like its going to be a garage job, does anyone know any reputable garages in the South Manchester / Stockport area that arent going to faint at the sight of a G60 Engine? Im from Leics and normally nip over to Jabbasport but now working in Manchester and its a bit far.....

Thanks for that advice Henny. To clarify to everyone else the G60 had been doing 28-32 on actual consumption and MFA figs for the last 2 years. Much better than my 2L 16V I had the misfortune to own before! As soon as you mentioned the lambda sensor was at the back of the engine alarm bells started to ring. As you might remember I has been on the forum last week to get the part number for the master cylinder that my rather incompetent local MOT station were trying to fit......sure enough, looked down the back of the block and a couple of the wires had been ripped out the back of the sensor. No doubt by some hamfisted tvvat at the garage. Id have loved to go back there, but im up in manchester and it'd have cost me more in petrol than the repair, with its current consumption....grrr Under any circumstances, no one go to county vehcle services in Houghton, Leicestershire. Anyway, it appears to be fixed. Thanks again

I noticed last week my G60 was costing more than normal at the pumps. Have just done a bit of an experiment and put in exactly 45 litres of petrol (thats ten gallons i think?!) and I got 164 miles out of it. 16.4MPG approx? (someone please tell me if im wrong!) The trip computer is hovering around the same as normal (28-32MPG) How accurite is the trip computer? does it work off the actual fuel burnt? Something that seems to have coincided with this is that the engine is occasionaly a bit groggy when cruising. The best way I can describe it is like an old car with a manual choke if you leave it out when warm it sometimes kind of glugs and judders a bit and then goes back to normal. The car had been off the road for a couple of weeks so I had put this down to maybe a bit of damp in the electrics but it is still doing it a couple of weeks on. Any ideas? Do I have a leak (cant see/smell one) or is there some kind of misfireing going on thats burning fuel but not being spotted by the MFA? Cheers

My G60 had a similar problem. It turned out that this small rubber washer on the screw lid of the expansion tank had been forced up by it overheating. Once it was in the up position it stayed there and there was nothing for the system to pressurise against. The system kept boiling out through the top of the expansion tank, no matter how many times I refilled it even when the engine wasnt particuarly hot. I suppose if this is what is happening it doesnt explain why the washer has moved in the first place. A 2 hour traffic jam on the M25 on the hottest day of the year did for mine, once i repositioned it I had no more problems. I hope your problem is as simple as mine was!

Ive got a stage 4 charger, but just the standard chip and pulley. Forgot to mention that. Its done 160,000 miles and I didnt fancy blowing the engine up by upping the power!! As I remember the stage 4 was supposed to have some kind of super efficient or wear resistant seals, but I dont immagine they make much difference!

Please correct me if im wrong...... but I am of the opinion of G60Dan. My oil light seems to come on when im either low, or giving it some serious stick (over 130 oC) I presumed it was sensitive to both conditions......

Ive never calculated my mpg for sure. But ive owned a 2.0 16v which...... would do 23mpg (on the trip computer) on a run and single figures if i was giving it some hammer. My G60 is ammazingly efficient, im looking at 35 on a run and 28 around town. last month i was cruising down the motorway and decided to have a play. Got the MPG up to 49 by cruising at 58ish mph.

Thanks everyone. I gave that screenshot to the MOT station today and they have got the part on order. Hopefully I will be back on the road by the end of the week. Im glad you guys knew your stuff cause I didnt seem to be getting anywhere fast speaking to my local garage and the VW main dealers!!
-
Hmm, that leaves me a little confused. My Garage have shown me my part and VW's interpretation of my part and they are certainly different! I will have to find out if they have used the number that you suggest. Im starting to loose faith in them fast....!!!! Thanks for the help, if anything else springs to mind please let me know!

I am having some trouble getting my G60 through the MOT. It went in a week ago and the garage said they needed to replace the rear callipers as they were too weak. This was done and I was then told the brakes still weren’t right and I needed the master cylinder changing. (I don’t know how they can be sure the callipers are no good if the master cylinder was no good all along- have I just binned a perfectly good pair of 2yr old callipers???? – but that’s another story) They are now having trouble sourcing the correct master cylinder from VW. They have (apparently) given them the part number on the old part and the chassis number but keep being sent the wrong part. My master cylinder (and ones I have seen for sale) have just 2 ports down the front of the cylinder. The ones the garage is being sent have 4 ports down the front. VW are insisting there is only 1 part. I think the problem lies with the fact that the car has ABS. Am I right in saying that ABS was only fitted on some G60’s? and the ones that do have it share a braking system with the VR6? Any help on this would be appreciated, has anyone else suffered a similar problem? As you might have guessed im getting a little annoyed with the whole thing now, I didn’t have 2 weeks of public transport in mind when I went for the MOT!!!!
