  3. managed to sort the problem out with Gavins help - turned out it was the nut that was loose and needed tightening - thanks alot for all of your useful comments really helped me out - feels little wiered not going from reverse to second now :) I am going to have to have a word with the garage now!! wish me luck!..........
  4. I know was going to just that i am so busy at the moment with work and more work that i thought if i was to take it to a garage to do the job for me then it would cost not alot and save my time too........how i was wrong - going to get it done then take the car back to the garage and see the gaffer (who is on holiday at the moment). I will look at it next couple of days (prob thursday) and see what i can do - and may give you a ring Gavin if no luck - thanks alot!
  5. Just got car back and garage assured me that there was no way of adjusting the cable. they removed the selecter box which they said 'looked ok' - where the cables meet on the gear box the cable on top has a nut on it - is this the nut to tighten the cable? if so why did they not do it?? daves16v, Yes i think i would be interested in your box and cables - would they fit a 93 VR6?
  6. Ended up taking car to my local garage to have look at it and they have just got back to me saying that they had to take the exhaust down to get to the cables and look at them - in their opinion there looks to be nothing physically wrong with the cables and looks fine so they not sure if it is the cables or not. He said to me that it is either the gear cable, gear box or selecta unit that is at fault. Told me that i should replace the cable as it the cheaper option and quoted me £58 plus VAT for the part from main stealers. I cant see it being the gear box myself but garage said could be a possibility. Peed off a bit now as i am having to pay 80 pound labour to end up no better off than when i started.................... :( Where would be the best place to get a cable from does anyone know (if it is the cable that needs replacing) ????? Help much appreciated.....
  7. Great sounds exact the same as my problem - I will have a look at it and see if can adjust mine ok - thanks alot for the help - let you know how get on
  8. Just been out in it now and it fine just to get 1st gear i have to push down and move towards revrese (reverse still fine if push down and all way to left as usual) and all other gears feel fine - only bit more funny getting it into second - like going from reverse to second - confusing :? Looks all well greased and fine under gear shift - think might be a garage jobber to sort out :( Didnt think main stealers and free would ever come up on the same line
  9. Been having a bit of a problem sometimes selcting first gear - only seems to do it sometimes but getting a little worse. If i try and put it in to 1st as normal it sometimes selects 3rd and I have to put it in 2nd then move it up to to select 1st. Been looking through the old posts and found a couple of similar problmes - people said to lift off gear surround and look for clip to see if has broken - all looks good under there - another solution was that a nut or something needs tightening but not too sure where i would find this. Could anyone who may have had similar problems let me know what they did...?
  10. Blue VR spotted near Chorlton - I was in the green VR behind you - turned off up kingsway... anyone?

    Dipped headlights

The loom has 2 Yellow(10?) fuses in it - tell you what ill take a pic and post Bought car from a CCGB member in Warrington at time
  13. I have noticed from time to time that when i start my car up sometimes the dipped headlights used to come on for a short period and also when i switch my lights off at night the dash lights flicker a little (is this normal?). Anyway... I have an uprated wiring loom on the headlights and about 2 weeks ago they would only come on with side lights or main beams (not dipped) so i checked under the bonnet and replaced both the fuses on the wiring loom (they were very dirty and one looked a little melted :? ) but hey presto they worked - well they did for about a week and now same thing again (sidelights or main beams) so checked fuses in loom and fine and also ones in car and they all fine too - I have got a feeling that it could be something to do with the uprated loom but as i didnt fit it or know much about it i dont know if this would be the case (i.e only sides and main beams) has any one had any similar problems to this and or what it could be? I can drive with side lights on and fog lamps too (so i can see at night) but sooner or later i will prob get pulled by the police with the classic line "is it foggy where your from.......?" any help much appreciated
  14. I agree looks like the rear end is cross with a 206 CC and batmans car with the front windscreen chopped to half size. Looks like someone has spent a hell a lot of time doing it though!!

  16. My 93 VR6 has a AMD chip and remap and have a printout reading 203BHP - as for the 'is it noticable' i could not comment as it was put on by prev owner but i do get some good MPG readings on the motorway which is always good for a VR :D
  17. I found after hours of filling out forms and phone calls later that Elephant and Bell Direct are by far the best (both part of the Admiral group). Much cheapness........ :)

    Hand Break Cable

ok thanks for that - i will be taking car to get that done then!!! :( I have only recently bought the car and the person i bought the car from said that he had late style MK3 rear calipers - which have alot less chance of seizing - put on the rear - with that in mind i thought that the handbreak cable was a little tight on the wheel, so loosened (as it was a touch) and still the problem exisits - but as you say it sounds like i need a new caliper! off hand does anyone know how much money a new caliper would be? Thanks alot for help Bees

    Hand Break Cable

Yes i located the cable fine and adjusted it to one of the wheels (thanks alot :) )- but the wheel still does not spin as freely as it should - as other rear wheel spins fine. The rear brake calipers are uprated golf MKIII - ones with the springs - but i think that it is the caliper sticking or seizing up a bit - i drive and it normally ok but sometimes (twice in last week) smoke starts coming out from the rear brake and i can sometimes smell the pad on the disc too when i brake hard - and like said the wheel does not move as freely as it should Do you think it is Seizing? and if so would it mean a whole new caliper?

    Hand Break Cable

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the adjusters for the hand break cable are located on my 93 VR6 – I would have thought they were either under the plastic surround where the hand break is or under the car – could any one clarify this for me. Thanks a lot
