After my episode with the Schrick inlet manifold, i thought i'd give you my lastest installment, this time with 268 cams So the other week i fitted some 268 cams to my vr6, not Schrick cams, but Dougherty Racing ones, These are absolutely awesome! I think vr6's should have left the factory with these cams! The lift and duration of the Dougherty Racing cams is identical to the Schrick cams, and like Schricks are not regrinds! Now for the best bit: they only cost me £150 to my door! compared to the £550+ for Schrick cams! Fitted the cams along with some new tappets and the engine is nice and quiet again and still silky smooth on idle. Where the power tailed off with the standard cams at about 5k, the 268s scream to the red line! We'll see how much difference they have made to bhp/lbft next Sunday when the car will be on Stealths rollers again.

agreed!

Kev, there is a flat spot about 3800rpm but cant hear a change in engine note at 4k when the flap opens. A friend of mine also has a Schrick on her vr and i can hear the tone change in engine note when the flap opens at 4k, this im not getting, which makes me think the flap isn't closing 100% therefore like you say acting like a normal manifold. Totally agree about not being able to argue with the numbers, and the ClubGTi rolling road day at the end of april would show what difference the Schrick has made, however, im being a nuisance and adding a set of 268cams into the equation too, lol, so unfortunately not really going to be able to tell what difference the Schrick alone has made.
-
Correct, it is an OBD2 schrick manifold, only difference being for fitment of the different throttle body, and the fitting for the idle stabilization valve on OBD1
-
so the general consensus is that im not going to see any gain at all fitting a schrick to my engine just because it has a mk4 metal headgasket unless i get it remapped? OR, that the schrick isn't working properly? i still haven't taken it off to make sure the flap is closing fully, thats a job for the weekend.
-
as i keep sayin, it wont be mapped with schrick as its only been put on as a test of before and after, im not saying anyone is mad, and certainly not saying anyone is lieing about results they've experienced with a schrick, - this being the main reason why i wanted to try one on my car!!! 199lbft at 3500rpm is a nice figure you have there! If you look at my torque graph i posted earlier in the thread i have approx that too WITHOUT a schrick and WITHOUT remap and 214lbft just over 4k!
-
I wouldn't exactly call it a highly modified engine though...apart from exhaust and filter, everything else is just standard vw parts. and to be honest, i cant see getting it mapped is going to find me an extra 20 odd lbft of torque and a couple of bhp everyone else sees with one of these.

Vince told me that once I had the metal head gasket and Schrick I couldn't run on 95RON anymore and had to run on Super to avoid pinking. So perhaps you should stop using 95RON and put some Super in it? i do normal run super (optimax i prefer) anyway, just last couple of weeks have been a bit tight for so 95ron has been going in, i have now done 2 tanks of super and has reduced pinking, but it is still there on the odd occasion, i know getting it mapped would help, but thats not going to happen, well not with a schrick anyway, lol, going on my experience i just dont know how people can justify buying a schrick and then mapping on top too, a lot of money for in my opinion not much gain.
-
Its not pinking JUST because i've fitted a schrick, although it has increased how much it does pink! A combination of mk4 metal headgasket, 95ron petrol and a schrick altogether is causing it to pink,
-
dont think i will, however, going to inspect this weekend, all week i've been using optimax and the pinking has got a lot less, but still there, will see what happens after this weekend.

ssssssshhhhh!!

Sorry, my mistake, engine made 196bhp (not 197bhp like i said) and 214lbft couple of months ago at Stealth i will be running again at stealth at the end of april fro a ClubGTi rolling road day, unfortunately i'll have a set of 268cams in there too so wont be to see the comparison of before and after just with the schrick. NB. The following graphs are WITHOUT the schrick
-
This is what ChrisP and I are now thinking, maybe the flap isn't closing fully? Yes, 2.9 obd2, mk4 metal head gasket, bmc, and jetex exhaust, made 197bhp and 214lbft at stealth a few months back, i'll post up the graphs when im home from work. i just sold a 2.8 24v for £700. that's LESS than shreks go for. there you go, obviously it depends on your mechanical knowledge and willingness to give it a go yourself, but my vr6 was fitted in my mk2 by myself and mates (chrisp being one of them) Not trying to put people off buying these, the main reason i wanted to try one was becuase of so many people having good experiences with them! its just unfortunate my experience hasnt been good - yet!
-
I know the fact of it fouling the fans is due to it being in a mk2, there's nothing wrong with my install, the point i was trying to get across is its not a direct replacement of the standard manifold, forgot to mention i am also using slimline fans Im not saying everyone is wrong at all! This is purely my opinion of the schrick manifold on my engine, did everyone else already have 214lbft of torque before they installed their schrick? Afriad not in this case, i wont be getting it mapped as it was purely an experiment of seeing the before and after, the schrick wont be staying on as it isn't mine, i do understand that a remap would help, but bang for buck this mod would be a thumbs down from me for the cost of a schrick + remap i would rather install a 24v! has no-one else had problems with eibach strut brace?
-
Yes it has started pinking a lot more, my engine does pink a bit when using 95ron which i have been using recently, i put this down to that,
-
its definately working as i can see the flap opening and closing at around 4k, can also see the light changing from green to red on the control unit, yes, certain, lol you can have it if you want, it'll be up for sale soon, been driving the car yesterday and today, done quite a few miles on it now, still cant feel the HUGE midrange everyone is talking about.... I think the reason why is my engine has more torque without a schrick than alot of engines with one! only way i'd notice its on there is by opening the bonnet. on my experiences of one albeit a NA engine, id say definately not!
-
I can honestly say i cant notice any difference at all! VR6 - how would i go about resetting the ecu? I would hate to have paid for one of these, especially if a remap is needed (another £300+?) before i see ANY gains, the reason behind the rad having to move forward is probably becuase my car is a mk2 golf, however i had no clearance issue with the stock manifold, CazzaVR i agree with you, maybe my vr is just freak with 214lbft already and what the schrick does mine has already!
-
very dissapointed with this tbh, Started fitting it friday night and finished saturday morning, all wired and plumbed in without too much bother, however, i did run into a few fitting problems: 1) my eibach strut brace no longer fits anymore (fouls the top of the throttle body) 2) i have had to move my rad forward and inch so the fan doesnt foul the runners on the inlet. on the road i cant notice any difference at all! so much so i didnt think it was working. so i took the car to a quiet area with no houses around etc and gave the car a rev, the light on the control box changes from green to red at 4k and i can see the flap opening all the way, so it obviously working as it should. I just dont notice any difference at all when driving. maybe its because my car is so strong already, last time i was at stealth i made 197bhp & 214lbft, its a 2.9 converted to OBD2 with mk4 metal head gasket, BMC and Jetex exhaust system. I wonder what difference on the rollers the schrick has made, personally dont think it'd peak any higher! Needless to say if i paid £1200+ for one of these i would be very p155ed off, in fact, even if i paid the 2nd hand going rate for one i was still be extremely annoyed and would be taking it off to sell on. Luckily i didnt pay it at all, its a mates and he asked me to try it out on my car as he doesnt have a working vr6 at the moment.

I have 16x7.5" RCs i ran 195/45 16 but found the rear rims got loads of chips from stones around the rim, fronts were fine,

i bought a custom samco hose set through a mate of mine, i didnt want the two oil breathers that come in the kit, and wanted the two oil cooler hoses that dont come in the kit .... took about 4weeks to arrive
-
these the two oil cooler ones you mean?
-
i believe he's going for a gt35r
-
mine was on throttle bodies then, and had a 304deg cam so was a little bit lumpy on idle etc etc, but i liked it, now ive got a silky smooth vr6, i do miss it!
-
I had vibratechnics rear mount and sold it and got a gsf 16v rear mount as a replacement as i was bit strapped for cash, i found the gsf mount much stiffer than the vibra mount, noticeably less movement but of course increased vibration, tbh, i quite liked it. imho its much better mount than the vibra one
