I had to buy new 'old' style larger spring plates to fit the weitec kit to mine, but the top mounts were fine... in fact when i asked, VW said they only listed one type of top mount for the corrado, let alone the VR6..... anyway, they fitted fine.... you just need the spring plate to fit nicely with bottom of the bearing, not the rubber top mount.... pb

well im £94 pounds poorer but the guys at cambridge performance tyres did a good job and got both sides spot on - no +or-tolerances for them..!! The guy who took it for a test drive also commented how it was one of the nicest driving corrado's he has been in, as most 'crash and rattle over bumps...!!' And i have to say im VERY pleased with the results... both cambers were way off - well i have had everything at the front off - and both toes were well off as well... it drives so much better, and for the first time since ive had it it feels like im steering it as opposed to guiding it...!! Although the Weitec ultra GTs are 'Budget', i cant believe how good the ride is... maybe even better than standard as it doesn't wallow so much.... All i basically wanted was to lower the rear end to stop the small children pointing and laughing at me, and stiffen it a little bit. So for people like me who just cant face rock hard suspension anymore, but want it a little bit lower and stiffer than standard, these Weitecs get my vote... and £65 a corner..!! now i just need to get rid of the Nankang tyres on the front, and Jedi knight might be happy with the condition of his old car...!! pb

cheers guys, im booked in to have it set-up 14:00 today so am going to go with standard settings... I think this kind of adjustment might only be needed or made if i were doing track days and had lots of money for adjustments and to try lots of different settings...... I'm very excited about finally getting the suspension all right..... for now... I hope...!! pb

I've just finished my suspension overhaul of all new rubbers, bushes, coils and dampers and am ready for my camber and toe to be set-up at the front end.... Now I was thinking that as the standard suspension produces lots of body roll, is that why the VR standard camber is quite 'extreme' at -1.2', thus keeping the wheels 'flatter' to the road during cornering..?? If so, as It is now stiffer and produces less body roll, should i use less camber so that more of the tyre is in full 'flat' contact with the road..?? does anybody get what i mean or have any thoughts or experience of this?? many thanks, pb

how much free play on caliper slider pins..??
plateletboy replied to plateletboy's topic in Drivetrain
Cheers Guys, The pins look straight and as said the two bits slide well, it just feels a bit 'loose'. I've never known slider pins to wear out though. In real terms there isn't really a great deal of distance travelled along them, just a few 10ths of a mm i would have thought - dont they normally just seize?? Also as the piston moves freely and as the pressure will be applied evenly across pad-disk-pad-piston, will lateral play matter..!??! I'm going to give them all a good clean up and copper slip the bits the pads slide on.. refit it all and just keep an I on it for the next 1000 miles.... £100..!! Eeekk..!! pb -
Hey All, I have finally got around to doing ALL the suspension bits and bobs this week on the VR6... New rubber, springs, and dampers everywhere......... Whilst doing this I've had a good look at the disks and pads which look terrible.. the inner pad is rounded and only making contact on about 40% of its surface.... So, I've ordered new disks and pads from GSF yesterday. The thing is although the caliper and carrier freely slides on the pins, there is a fair amount of lateral movement.. Is this normal.? or rather how much movement should there be?? could this have caused the disk and pads to wear unevenly? and finally can i just buy new pins and 'bushes'.? i think VW will now only sell the whole carrier....... which i fear will be expensive.... cheers, pb

Ha HA HA HA HA HA Ha HA HA HA HA HA Ha HA HA HA HA HA Ha HA HA HA HA HA Ha HA HA HA HA HA Ha HA HA HA HA HA please don't take it to kwik fit.... they try and do ANYTHING to increase their profit margins on any job pb
-
when kwik fit say not possible, they mean not possible for them to make a high enough profit margin on it... and thats if they know how to do it.... its simple enough to drill it out and get a big easy out into it. pre-soak it with loads of proper Plus-gas, not wd40, for a few days... if it still wont budge drill it right out to just smaller than the bolt (M12..??) and run a tap through it..... basically its up to you whether you want to spend £10 or £250...... pb
-
The thing about GSF is the website is rubbish....... You need to pick up the phone and speak to them because they actually carry and can source so many more parts than what the website lists, and you can also check out who the manufacturers are .... If you actually get the part numbers from the website and then ask them for alternatives you'll normally find a few pounds more will be able to get you a much better part... They wanted to sell me V-tech wishbone bushes, but for 50p more each i could get Lemforder.... They were selling no brand heater matrix's for a few months, and then i picked up an OEM Valeo matrix from them for the same price a few weeks ago.... GSF has also changed from the scirocco to the corrado..... With the scirroco most bits were good enough and generally 'right'. With the VR lots of GSF bits will 'fit', but aren't necessary the right bit - e.g. the front top mounts they will sell you are the same ones that fit a 1.4 golf 3... obviously the VR will 'eat' these with all the extra weight bouncing on them... you've just got be be a bit selective, and weigh up the price difference with VW - which sometimes can be huge, and others times same price as VW...?!?!? pb

I was getting those valve errors a lot. I gave it a really good pressure bleed through with lots of new DOT 4 fluid (2l)and it has definately helped.... but then what came out was so dirty you couldn't see through it.... maybe worth a try if your fluid is old or of unknown history pb

I've always been a bit confused as to whether the aux pump is supposed to 10 min over run or not... Mine doesn't, but everything else does what it should... So i was looking into this and an american forum thread claimed that there were 2 types of control module, one that over runs, and one that doesn't..?!? I guess it could have been a VW USA thing at the time, and since then VW phased out the controllers to just one part number that we see in the UK??!? Has anybody else heard this..?!? At the moment i'm not ready to spend £120 to check if the lack of over run is the module or not, so if its been thrashed i let it idle for a bit until i switch it off....... pb

you dont have to remove the exhaust to change the rear brake pipe. just loosen the heat shield (star clips) and rest it on top of the exhaust (maybe one exhaust hanger to loosen, i cant remember..), and the clips holding the solid pipe on are accessible either side and you can slide it out... most importantly remember how you slide it out, because you have to slide the new one back in the same way...!! pb
-
why are you putting on a new starter motor??? just replace the corroded earth strap and all will be fine...... pb
-
the Fuchs stuff has exactly the same approvals list on the back as the synta silver (VW 505.00), and I have also heard VW are now using it from factory

Cheers Charley, Its looks so small for so much work...!! maybe only 15 x 30 cm... is that right?? Unfortunately (??) I have aircon - which currently doesn't work - so im fairly sure i have to take the dash right out..... murray

Hey All, I've had the matrix bypassed for a couple of months now, and finally got round to getting a new matrix now its a bit more pleasant to be working on cars in the back garden...... I've been speaking to GSF for a couple of months and the matrices have all been 'non-branded' made in china which I know have a bad reputation... Anyway the one delivered last week is a proper Valeo matrix, stamped up with the VW numbers and made in France, etc.... £36.50 + VAT Bargain..!! get them in.....!! cheers, PB

Hey all, had the first MOT with the VR6 yesterday, which is always a bit of a brown pant moment, but it failed on 2 things i suspected it would. Basically it needs a new windscreen due to 3 stone chips, and all rear brake pipes (still the original steel factory ones).... As i'm getting under there and am going to have to re-bleed the hell out of it, and chances are the brake lines will be seized to the hoses, I thought I'd take the opportunity to put nice new braided stainless steel hoses on all round?!?! So, which ones can i get or need? the only ones i can find so far are goodridge ones which i think are: SVW1025-6, corrado VR6 > 1995. But, there seem to be many posts after searching about wrong kits, fittings, banjo's, etc, etc Its a Corrado VR6, M-reg, 1994, ABV, with a film MAF.... from what i can work out. any suggestions greatly appreciated?? pb

Exactly...!! I just dont understand why the simplest method of putting 'cost' on petrol always gets slated..... pb
-
You've missed my point.... I understand why we have blanket car taxes, what i don't understand is why governments think putting a higher rate of car tax will encourage people to be 'green' with their journeys...... If I had to pay £400 a year on the VR, I would probably come out of the house in the morning and think "well that cars tax is costing me £400 a year, i'd better use it more.... I know, i'll drive to work" a higher rate on a blanket tax doesn't change peoples mentalities about the reason or way they drive...... its just one payment a year (or 6 months) and then its forgotten about... pb
-
What really annoys me about this car tax 'blanket approach' to making us green is that for me, living in Cambridge, i cycle to work 5-days a week, or to town, or anywhere i need to go within a reasonable distance............ But i drive a corrado VR6 when i need to (or want to.... :D ), and only around 4000 miles a year.... so who is 'greener'..?? my neigbour with the prius who drives EVERYWHERE, even the postbox at the end of the road, or me with a 2.9 L 'guzzler'..??? pb

the problem is with silicon the element, rather than silicone from sprays, sealants and boobs...... although they contain an amount of silicon its in a different chemical form... i think they use silicon as an antofoaming agent for diesel, which is how the tank cock-up originally happened.... still very weird ford and VW unaffected... pb
-
they have just said on the news that so far VWs, and one other make, haven't really been affected?!?!? which i thought was quite funny......... Are VW lambda's bosch only, or different equipment to other makes of car? pb
-
Vag-Com, Vag-Com, Vag-Com and Vag-Com oh, and a laptop i suppose........ pb
-
You are better of with NGK's number BKR5EKU from sparkplugs.co.uk, or sometimes to be found cheaper from ebay. usually about £25 with delivery for all 6. Bosch aren't recommended for VR6 engines, they fit okay and work but i guess they dont like the heat of something??!?! pb
