Blue temperature sensor was changed approximately 1000 miles ago. Before that it was getting hideously bad mpg...17mpg in all conditions. The plugs were taken out with the engine not far off normal working temperature.

No I never really tank the car at all...having said that I think I should retract my statement about the oil level being ok as I checked it again this afternoon with the engine warmed up and the car standing still and the level had dropped below the minimum again so this confirms without a doubt that it is using up the oil much too quickly. My own synopsis on the plugs is that they are pretty damned sooty which explains to me why the car's mpg is not great. The soot was not baked on however as a quick wipe with a cloth got them nice and clean again. The small amounts of oil on a couple of the plugs are a mystery to me though...I mean there is even oil on the threads of some of the plugs and I have no idea how that could happen as there are no actual oil leaks on the engine whatsoever.

1994 VR6 with 107K miles on it. The engine is not actually giving me any performance problems...fires up beautifully hot or cold, pulls sweetly throughout the revs and has no misfires or flat spots etc. However it's never been great on mpg, and only starts to get approximately 25mpg once fully warmed up (driving in normal traffic conditions), but up till then my my MFA average reading is around the 20.1 mark. Slightly more concerning is the fact that it has recently started to get rather thirsty for oil. I noticed a couple of months ago that the oil level had dropped just below the minimum level on the dipstick so I topped it up with a an extra litre. That was around 800 miles ago but a couple of weeks ago whilst driving to work the dreaded oil beeper started constantly sounding off and, naturally, I nearly wet myself and headed to the nearest Halfords for another litre, which seemed to cure it. Anyway driving home last night the beeper momentarily went off again for a few seconds and then, thankfully, stopped. I got home safely and checked the oil level when cold first thing this morning. The oil level was in the middle of the min/max crosshatched area of the dipstick so low oil level cannot have been the thing that set the beeper away again. The car has always puffed a bit of black smoke but I cant say I've ever noticed any blue. Anyway I whipped out the plugs and the photos below show them in all their glory. Any initial thoughts? http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt225/TMJ1972/plugs2.jpg http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt225/TMJ1972/plugs3.jpg http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt225/TMJ1972/plugs4.jpg http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt225/TMJ1972/plugs5.jpg http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt225/TMJ1972/plugs6.jpg http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt225/TMJ1972/plugs1.jpg

I have a chance to buy a Storm for £4K, a mystic blue with pristine bodywork and has 125K on the clock. It has full VWSH but no history of any major renewal of worn out parts. I have not viewed the car but the owner claims that there are no issues with the timing chains/tensioners, but neither is there any history of them being changed. So what are the major parts that have a history of breaking down or should have been replaced by the time a VR6 reaches this mileage?

Where's the competition bit gone from this feed? What did you have to do to win it?
-
Lucky sod. It will have to be a Xmas present for me. If I'm VERY lucky!

I wondered about that steering wheel when I read the article in the supermarket :) last week. How come I have never seen any other Rado with one of these fitted? Was it a VAG item? Also, regarding the article, did anyone else notice it refering to VR6 timing BELTS??? Note to PCM journalist : Must try harder!

Think they're pretty easy to build...just time consuming. The falcon is a 16 hour minimum job apparantly....but thats after you've sorted all of the bits out - which takes another 16 hours.

Nah these are the Lego sets you want... http://shop.lego.com/Product/?p=10179 . Three feet long!! http://shop.lego.com/ByTheme/Product.as ... cn=57&d=70 . Lego Technic has come a long way since 1982! I want both but the falcon is, ahem, rather pricey! I'll settle for the truck for now.

From a purely selfish point of view I hope they drop massively. Up here in the North East the average house price is ELEVEN times the average salary. Insane.

Here's an old one off my P.C...doesn't really do it justice though. I'll take some more soon and get them up.jetta 001.jpg[/attachment:2msn1vu9]

What does he charge for a full respray?
-
You'd like this one then. I'll post up a piccie soon.
-
Not a fan then! :) You might not be saying that if I put up some piccies... Anyway I like them cos I like the underdog. Golfs are too obvious. And the Jetta actually has better handling. So there!

Dont remember the media telling us houses were overpriced, just that the prices were rising. Yeah it will be good if prices fall back to realistic levels, but an awful lot of heartache is gonna be felt before that happens. The banks may be taking a hard line on mortgages but they are still encouraging people into debt through credit cards and a loans. No surprise really when the whole modern UK economy has been built on credit. We are like an alcoholic who knows that what they are doing is bad for them but they haven't got the means or the will to stop.

How much was the Golf going for? Makes me wonder what my Jetta GTi is worth. Mint condition Tornado Red, late 1991 with FSH. Not that I'm selling it but I haven't taken any notice of the Mk2 market for a good while.
-
True, I think the media are being hysterical about it but I also believe that we are in for a serious downturn. The housing market is usually where it all starts and then everything else starts to tumble. I also think the banks are in collusion with the government to do anything to prevent the true picture coming out. I'm still being inundated with credit card and loan offers and I think most people are thinking if this is the case then things must be fine. I think the country is in a financial situation which is the equivalent of clinging onto the edge of a cliff, slowly losing grip.

My second car which is usually used for the commute is a 1991 Jetta GTi, 1.8 8V. Compared to the Rado's 20mpg average it gets about 32mpg. Much more acceptable and I still get to drive a cool old skool Dub.

Haha yeah I agree. One thing I've learned about the VR though is that it is an engine that doesn't really enjoy trundling around the town. Not that it has any issues but I can almost hear it saying to me "Come ooonnnn ..I wanna go FAST!" :) If I could use one word to sum up the Corrado VR6 it would be "muscle". 8)

I recently noted the MFA figures on a return home from work at 4:30pm on a warm-ish day:- Distance travelled - 5.2 miles. Journey Time - 16 minutes. Engine temperature after 16 minutes - 88 degrees. Average speed - 18mph Outside temperature after 16 minutes (it went up as the engine warmed up!!!) - 25 degrees. All of these figures gave a MFA mpg reading of 21.6. The journey consisted of trundling along at 30mph with the usual stop-start of traffic lights & queues. It would be interesting for people to do a similar test on their car and post up the result.
-
Bear in mind also that a VR is NOT the one to go for if you have a short commute to work. They take at least 20 minutes to get to normal working temperature and within that time frame the economy is appaling. Mine gets approximtely 20mpg for the first 20 minutes but after that (resetting the MFA) averages around the 27mpg mark. But that's with gentle driving!

Looks like the credit crunch and possible impending recession are starting to bite hard. Normally there would be a Corrado put up for sale on Pistonheads every few hours but there has hardly been any put up there within the last week or so. Add to that the fact that the guys selling them on here nearly always quickly drop their asking price and end up almost begging someone to buy their car off them. Oh yeah, and we are starting to see cars being sold for silly money. For example a very nice VR6 going for under £2K and a valver for £500...and still people are hesitating. I wonder where this will all end? I think the recession will kick in quite soon. The average price of a VR seems to be around the £3k mark. Will it drop to £2k within the next 12 months?

Calling planet Zog -is there room for Gordon Brown

So how is this tax hike going to affect us VR6 owners? -
Nice motor. One thing that I notice about black Corrados though is how much they suffer from "Orange Peel" paintwork. Mind you at least their excuse is that they are nearly 20 year old technology. I saw a two year old BMW with it the other day and I have seen a lot of new Renault Clios which suffered from it in an appalling way.

So where is the rust that was described? Cant see any from those photos!
