  1. This one looks good to me: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj2l-2-tonne-long-diy-trolley-jack Minimum height of 125mm as opposed to 14cm for the Halfords equivalent...
  2. Hmm you have a good point there, mine's lowered as well... I'll see if it fits tomorrow and take it back if it doesn't. Which one do you recommend, just a standard scissor/screw jack? Not sure I can stretch to a trolley jack...
  3. Hi all, I'm gonna have a bash at fixing my coolant leak at the weekend, so I just popped to Halfords and bought a bottle jack and a pair of axle stands. Just a couple of questions: the axle stands say you can't jack up one side of the car, stick the stand under, then jack up the other side and stick the other stand under... is that just over cautious safety advice or is there a real risk of the car sliding off the stands sideways? It suggests jacking the car up in the middle of the axle -- what's the best place to do this on a Corrado? ('93 VR6) I want to jack the front up, obviously... Also my coolant leak is slow, I can drive around for quite a few miles before having to top up the header tank -- I take it the temperature gauge is a pretty reliable indicator of the temperature of the block, so if I see it shoot up suddenly, obviously I'll stop.. but I've heard of some cars where the temp gauge actually measures the coolant temperature rather a long way from the block, so when you run out of coolant the indicated temperature actually drops (because there's no hot coolant near it)... I take it the Corrado is better designed than this? :) It's just I have to use my car for short journeys and don't really wanna seize the engine (duh) Thanks! Tom
  4. I have some cooling problems at the moment -- seems to be a leak on or near the right hand side (from the front of the car) of the radiator -- losing coolant and small amounts of steam coming from under the bonnet... looks like it might be new radiator time, hope it's just a hose though!
  5. I think its perfectly normal, when the engine is hot the water temperature may exceed 100 centigrade and not boil because its under pressure. When you open the header tank cap the pressure is released and the water boils very vigorously...
  6. 27 years old South Manchester VR6 with sports suspension, intake kit/ sports exhaust zero no-claims parked in designated parking fully comp 6000 miles/year £1250pa :( I think its the location and lack of no-claims that does it...
  7. I took my VR6 to the local garage the other day (to get the loose brake shield taken off -- see separate thread) and the mechanic told me that he reckons the rear suspension is knackered. Something along the lines of 'it's only sitting on the springs, and I can see oil leaking out of the shocks'. My question is, how can you tell if the shocks are knackered? The ride is pretty firm, and the suspension is generally quite noisy but I guess that's normal. Sometimes get a knocking sound from the back when going over bumps. The back bounces up and down OK with only minor squeaking. I believe the suspension is a Koni height-adjustable kit... Cheers T
  8. That is so wrong... let's just compare it with the real thing... 1969-shelby-mustang-gt500-eleanor-small.jpg[/attachment:286b9c1k] (I love those cars... :luvlove: )
  9. Took it to the local garage at lunchtime, they cut the bugger off for me (for free!) and the rattle has stopped... :)
  10. Thats it! It's totally loose on the RHS, rear wheel... Thanks for the suggestion! Now to work out how to remove it easily until I can get a replacement... Cheers! Tom
  11. Could be, I'll test that at lunchtime... If I recall correctly, this morning it seemed to give a little rattle when changing from 1st into 2nd when moving off.
  12. On the drive to work this morning, had a really good listen to the rattle... it happens loudest when the RHS rear wheel goes over a bump/pothole/manhole cover etc... definitely coming from the back, and louder on the RHS than the LHS. Gave the suspension a good bounce when I arrived but no noise (just a quiet squeak), nothing like the rattle... I hope the suspension isn't fooked.... :? T
  13. Thanks for the suggestions guys... looks like I may be in for a few rattly old miles! I'll have a good rummage around at the weekend and see if I can cure it... Cheers T
  14. My '93 VR6 has just developed a loud rattle from the back of the car. Everything feels right, steering, suspension, no extra exhaust noise. I've given the exhaust a good waggle and it doesn't impact anything. The back exhaust box heat shield was loose, so I took that off, which cured some of the rattle, but its still really loud. Checked for more loose parts of the shield but they all seem pretty firmly attached. Took it to the local garage today and they said it might be the suspension... but I'm not convinced. There are no noises when I bounce the back of the car up and down on the springs. The rattle occurs when going over small bumps or ridges (of which there are many in Manchester!), and it sounds like something quite light and tinny has come loose and is vibrating and hitting something hard. Seems to be coming from the RHS of the car (but that might just be because thats where I sit, in the driver's seat...) Any and all suggestions welcome... as I said the car drives fine still but makes such a racket people stop and stare (for completely the wrong reasons!) Thanks Tom

    Exhaust

Could do... I'm guessing that as it's there, it must need to be there though? Or can I get away without having one at all...? T

    Exhaust

I just noticed a loud rattle coming from the back of my VR... the heat shield above the back box has come loose. I guess I'll have to get a new one because it looks like the mounting holes in the shield have corroded through completely.... Anyone know of a good way of stopping it rattling for the time being, it sounds like I'm dragging a load of tin cans around! T
  17. Hi All, just thought I'd introduce myself, just bought a beautiful VR6 (from VRChris on here). It's the first car I've owned (but been driving various (inferior) cars for 10 years or so... Only had the C a couple of days and really chuffed so far, its a really enjoyable driving machine, looking forward to many thousands of happy miles in the future! Cheers Tom
