  1. Hi

Just wondering about the time taken to get a VR6 upto running temperatures for oil and water

just done headgasket and also had the engine out so am just a bit nervous on keeping an eye on everything

any info on your VR6 and time to warm up is much appreciated

I got oil temp at 90 degree in 10-12 minutes, will time again to be sure

but from memory it did heat up quicker.

I have replaced the full coolant system and done all engine gaskets apart from sump, not sure if this makes any difference

    opnions sought

    Oli

  2. well I did take engine out, install a new one, it did run real nice, have the head blew on that due to being totally ripped off with bum engine, and then done head and chains plus clutch, brakes, all new ancillaries, plus all engine gaskets

have done it with a friend who has built from scratch a s3 engine into an a3 and all associated issues

am planning just a nice easy a road first though with support car and tow rope after last experience

then on go nice new set of borbet lv5 on Friday all going well

finally mobile again, still going to get the boss to drive me to work though :salute:

  3. i would add this company as bad supplier http://www.directenginesuk.co.uk/

now fairly sure I was sold an engine with a blown headgasket, emulsion mixed in oil filter suggests running of engine to push mixture around prior to me getting the engine up and running, when the headgasket definitely went while on road testing

    also confrontational on the phone

now have stripped head to replace gasket

looked at piston size as was suspect over engine as camcover label stating engine nbr not legible

found I have been sold a AAA engine not ABV as per invoice

essentially 30 hrs work down the drain, grrrr

will see how this gets resolved

  4. hi

bit of a rant perhaps but still, bloody annoying to say the least

bought an abv corrado engine from http://www.directenginesuk.co.uk/

installed and head went while still guaranteed

accepted head gasket and bolt kit ( bit more practice for me with the spanners ) as recompense

get head off and check pistons as cam cover had no label ( engine nbr ) and area where engine nbr is near timing chains was illegible and corroded

my engine has pistons which at the top read 81.985, new engine from direct engines reads 80.985 ( true measure of engine size ) so 2.8 not 2.9

have receipt etc and states abv engine there

problem is "was it deliberate" or an unknowing "can't tell the difference externally and did everything we reasonably could to ensure it was correct", this last bit is my concern

either way engine out and new one in, bugger

thoughts as to next step, bear in mind they are most unreasonable so far..

  5. Hi

I have just got a second hand vr6 engine for my corrado vr6

however there are a couple of differences to my current one and I just want to make sure I got what I paid for

I specifically asked for a Corrado abv 2861 and was given some verbal history but nothing on paper apart from the fact the engine is an abv

I have looked for the engine nbr but no luck

My old engine has a plastic cover ( where the engine nbr is ) and the one I have just bought is metal ( but the label not readable )

On the side of the engine where the alternator is, my old engine has 3 holes, the new none.

Is there anyway to check apart from the engine nbr that this is an 2861 abv not a variant? The head has the same part nbr as my old one.

    Any help appreciated?

    Thanks

  6. hi

    try american express insurance

34, 3pts ( now gone ) , 7yrs ncb, vr6 mods suspension and air-filter and alloys ( I said minimum performance gain ), plus parked on road and 12000 miles, only £269 fully comp £250 excess

    got it from moneysupermarket.com

    hope this helps

  7. the main issue I have is being a non-mechanically minded accoutant ( maybe it is just being an accoutant )

I like to drive fast and there ends my engineering knowledge and practical abilities

I have a friend to do the headgasket test but after that it is costing me money.

If it is costing me money ( possibly lots ) I would defintely like a faster car back with upgraded parts where possible

This is where advice will be useful to suggest performance improvements

Also has anybody got recent prices for a headgasket rebuild?

Your opinions much sought and appreciated

  9. Again guys, your response always impresses.

    car is 95 vr6

Plan at mo is to run car unitl it gets hot and then check water pipe temperature compared to raidator temperature, if radiator cold then issue is thermostat is how a friedn explained it.

I have checked the oil and there is no emulsion on either filler cap or on dipstick

  10. Hi

Thanks for reading and possibly helping

I have overheating issue that started yesterday. I managed to limp home and give the car some time to cool down yesterday

This morning I have replaced any water lost from radiator from the day before( I had opened the water bottle but steam had gushed out so I had just left it to cool down normally with some steam able to escape. )

Today I have put about 2l of water in to the radiator system. The car ran fine but overheated within 15 minutes of slow easing driving and when I came to a stop at work, there was lots of steam and water dropping to the ground from the bottom of the water bottle.

So questions are, likely problem, and if it is a headgasket job, what else do I consider doing at same time as I know this costs money but if I get a faster car back it ain't all bad

Thoughts and comments gratefully appreciated. I am having the car trailered to a garage later today

    Oli
