Quick, non brilliant effort but may be good enough for a visual...

Hi all! I need to change my thermostat and coolant temp sender which I believe is going to involve draining the coolant. I drained and flushed the system about a month ago (I know, shoulda done it at the same time! DOH!). Can I just pour the drained coolant back in when done as its pretty new? Take it I'll need to run it through muslin or something to make sure there's no cack in it? Worth replacing the seal when doing the stat? Also need to change the oil cooler seal and take the rocker cover off as I think the gasket needs replacing. Not sure when the oil was done last so gonna preempt this and get some to replace. Quantum Silver 10W/40? Or does the 8v prefer something else? Is it worth changing the oil filter at the same time? Again, it doesn't look to have been done for a while but I'm not sure how often these need replacing? Got parts numbers off vagcat as follows... Oil Cooler Seal - 038117070A Oil Filter - 06A115561B Rocker Gasket - 051103483A Thermostat - 056121113D Seal - 038121119B Anyone confirm if they're correct? As for the coolant temp sender... forgive my ignorance.. is there more than one? Also, please feel free to chip in with anything else I should consider while I'm around these areas. Also if any of these jobs is a complete ballache or difficult. Thanks in advance

They better fuck off, if I get 6pts in the first 2 years I'm back to square 1!!

Has your ignition key got a button? Not that mine does anything but if you crack open the key, there is a chip thingy. I wouldn't have known if someone hasn't pointed it out on here

You aint met his mom! haha. Yeah I think that's his plan now... he was looking at ones a fair few miles away but as his old dear is.... lets say stubborn and "difficult" he's searching close to home now. Cheers for the info

Hi! A bloke at work is buying a car for his mom... well I say buying, she is paying and she will be the owner and keeper but she's old and he has the job of finding the car and agreeing the sale etc. Does she need to be there at the final sale / handover to sign anything?

I thought all the 8v's had a factory fitted immobiliser?

I've replaced the motor with a new one and although it seems ok when there is water on the screen, it is very slow still when there isn't.... but not slow like is juddering, just slow like its tired? Will see how it goes when used in rain (as that what its for!). Secondly, I managed to get the passenger side and middle section of the scuttle trim off and then the drivers side virtually shattered into a hundred pieces. I've got an SWG one in the pipeline but for now is there anything I need to seal up? Some of the white clips broke... are these holes the only entry point for water? Cheers

My mate had a black SR. Was completely standard until he heavily modified the front end with an oak tree!! They were the chav car of choice st one point. 90% of the drivers I know my age have owned one.

It seems that these are listed in 5 metre lenghts but what I want to know is what the "9X3" or 3.5X2" bit means (see link below... numbers 5, 11 etc)? If I was to replace all the lines with silicone jobs I'd need to know the internal diameter wouldn't I? http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/COR/1995/76/49/841652/

These arrive today... Not new but new to me and seem in good nic. Gonna wait for a month or so until I have my front G60 brake set up ready to put on... get it all done in one go. Ordered wiper linkage bits although 3 are now on back order as well as the one part being obsolete, along with a foilage cover seal, wiper motor ans scuttle clip bits. Got an SWG scuttle off of here as well so a nice job to put that lot on when it all arrives too. Alloys are lookin good too now the lips and dishes are polished. Not mirror perfect but then my car isn't a catwalk model and they'll fit in nicely I think. Plus I think the big dish would be a bit too 'bling' if it was mirror shiney shiney. Will get pics up sometime this week.

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! As much as people may rave about them, French cars SUCK! My misses has a 206 and I detest it. Everything about it is awful - driving position, gear change, engine, road noise. Much better to stay with a German mark if you're after reliability too I think. I tend to agree mate with the exception of the 205 and the 306. Never known one to be completely unreliable, not german standard no, but not as bad as other french tin boxes. I would personally go German but he wanted ideas "other than the norm".

cheers for the help. much appreciated. :salute:

Cheers! Do you know if the SWG one attaches via the same clips?

Right, I've taken the wipers off and the motor still turns slowly. To remove it it looks like the bracket has to come off first so few questions... Scuttle panel - Mine is bonded to the windscreen with silicone I think, as this is bound to snap while removing it I'm gonna have a new one ready. Either original or SWG, not decided yet. What I want to know is do they both attach via clips as I don't want to bond to the windscreen again if I can help it. The other shaped, thin bit of plastic covering the heater matrix on the passenger side. Is this still available from VW?

I had seen that one but wasn't sure if it was the same as what you'd get from the dealers.

Right, I was certain my wiper motor was on the way out until I drove home tonight. Wipers did their usual, start off fine then get slower and slower stopping 3 or 4 inches from the proper park position. Usually using the spray function resets them to normal operation for so long, but tonight it didn't. Washer jets were very weak, just about getting water to the bottom of the screen after a few attempts. I pulled up at some lights and the rev counter dropped to zero for a split second and then back up. I had my blowers on 3, my stereo on and headlights but they all seemed to be business as usual and no warning lights came on the dash. I turned everything but my lights off and as I pulled off it did it again but now I was at some kinda speed the speedo needle dropped as well as the rev counter. The engine didn't seem to loose revs though? Just the needle dropped. I have noticed in the last couple of weeks the idle until warmed up was around 1000 rather than 750ish but put this down to cold weather. Even when warmed up though the revs seem to drop off before picking up when changing gear, some times pretty badly causing an acrobatic but never-the-less annoying bunny hop style pull off. Having a listen from the outside when I got home the exhaust was popping under a quick blip of the throttle while stationary. Don't think it used to? I'm amusing its not the alternator because everything other than the wipers and this recent dash issue have been working fine. Electrical issue somewhere? This may all be separate issues or one thing causing it all but I thought the more information the better? A starting point or list of things to check would be brilliant people. Thanks in advance as always.

Cheers Kev... any opinions on non OE motors? Will they last any longer than a second hand genuine item?

Anyone know if the Golf MK3 wiper motor will fit my 8v? Or the makers of the correct motor so I can buy direct or from another source for less than the dealers price? Appreciated

Hi, sorry! Full of questions! Looking at different sets on the net there are 4 line or 6 line kits... Goodridge seem to be 6 lines, HEL differ between 4 or 6 lines depending on model. I'm assuming that there are 2 front, 2 rear and the other 2 go to something else? Confused.com
