MK4 brakes all round/ tools I need are?

Hi guys

I know this has been discussed a bit but before I go out and get everything I thought I'd just check...

For the rears I need MK4 calipers, mk2-mk4 braided hoses, normal corrado vr6 disks and mk3 golf pads

For the fronts I need mk4 calipers, mk2-mk4 braided hoses, normal corrado vr6 disks, mk3 golf gti pads and mk3 golf gti carriers

1. Please make corrections if needed

2. Which tools do I need to take the old stuff on and put the new stuff on - I have socket sets and trolley jacks and standard stuff but no caliper tools and such like?

3. Will this set up fit under speedlines/solitudes 15's or do I need spacers in the front?

Any help would be excellent thanks

Also do people think it is possible to do myself?

front you need golf vr6 discs

 

288 mm disc - 3A0615301A (obviously u need 2 of these)

pads - 8N0698151

 

those are the VW numbers

 

they all fit under the 15" speedlines or solitudes infact the fronts actually a designed different to the corrado ones so there is actually more space between the face of the caliper and the inside of the spoke

For the fronts i just used a big G clamp and the old pad to push the piston back in...for the rears you need a special tool though.

 

Also do people think it is possible to do myself?

 

the hardest part will be bleeding the brakes again as i understand...i think it can be a bit complicated if you dont do it in the exact right order... i have tried to ask about bleeding brakes before but got so many different replies about ezbleed systems, ignition on, engine on, DONT DO IT YOU'LL SHAG THE SYSTEM, its easy i could do it with eyes closed...type comments i kinda gave up asking :roll:

i think you dont need the mk3 carriers for the rear?? not so sure as i havent done it myself yet... but i think its just mk4 calipers and carriers?

Ah I see and it's not one of those jobs were you can try doing some yourself and then take the car over to a garage (good old John) to do the rest as I may crash, I'll probably buy the stuff in, give the calipers a quick paint first and be done with it. I'm spending too much on this car at the moment :(

im gonna try it myself to be honest and if it doesnt work then i'll have to get it taken on a trailer to a garage.

 

if your changing all the brakes you may aswell change the fluid in the whole system anyway so its worth getting done...it would be easier but..due to having to change the hoses and obviously not being able to clamp the copper pipes..alot of air will be introduced into the system and will need sorting fully before driving anywhere

MKIV rear calipers just fit back on EXACTLY the same way as the old ones did... the only difference is the way the brake pipe connects to the caliper (which actually makes things easier IMHO!)

actually i dont think the rears have carrirs as such?? think they may just bolt straight on?? dont quote me though

 

My Mk4 calipers still have the rusty old carriers on them, so I would imagine you can use either the standard C ones or the Mk4 ones. The standard C ones definitely work though.

and from the other mk4 brake related posts I've read the mk3 golf gti pads front and back are the ones to get

 

Don't know about front, but the rear ones are definitely Mk3 GTI (although standard Corrado ones will fit).

 

I'd also be inclined to go for the Pagid FR pads, as they work very well with the VAG steel (see sig ;) )

honestly, you only have remove the old rear calipers and bolt the new ones in place instead! That simple, no other parts needed except for the pipe! I even used the pads which were already on my car (mintex 1144 MKII golf rear) as both them and the disks were replaced not long before I realised the calipers were dead... :roll:

 

As with just about all work on a Corrado, many people would be able to do this themselves, but if you aren't confident of your abilities, I'd book it into a garage to get it done as brakes are pretty much the most important safety device on a car, and screwing 'em up is really not a good idea... :|

For the rears you also need the Mk3 handbrake cable clips...

 

BTW - Halfords are selling off all there Sykes Pickavent tools and the caliper windback tool is £12.99 now :wink:

You've lost me there mate.....

 

The Corrado handbrake cables are retained as they hook straight up to the MK4 calipers, so therefore the original Corrado cable clips can be retained.

 

Or are you talking about something else????

LOL, I think he's talking about the handbrake cables for the trailor he's currently making. The junk he carries around in his boot permanently is over-flowing onto the seats, so now needs more luggage space to put it all :lol:
