Jerky at low revs

Can anyone help me? I've owned a corrado 16v for 6 months and already spent what i paid for it on work, :mad: very jerky and unresponsive in low revs (can be felt slightly at 50mph). already renewed plugs, leads, rotor arm, distributer cap and exhaust system. Unable to remove injectors?do you have to take out complete bar to get to them?could they be blocked

I had a low rev misfire on my VR6, resetting the ECU and getting the car to relearn the engine curves seemed to do the trick. It was worth trying first for me as it didn't cost anything!. Not sure if the procedure is the same on 16V, but I'm sure someone will know.

Has the battery been disconnected on it recently?

funbox, can you tell me how you reset the ECU? I've got a really bad misfire at the mo esp at low revs and so might try this first, thanks

Disconnect the battery for a bit. Half an hour should do the trick

OK dudes this is how to reset your ECU, please note though this worked on VR6 I'm not sure about other models:

This info came from a very helpful chap after I posted my problem at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Corrado-UK

ECU reset should be performed every time that the battery is disconnected for more than just a few minutes.

Run the engine until oil & water reach 80 degrees.

Disconnect the battery for at least 5 minutes.

Reconnect battery and within 10 minutes perform the following 2 procedures:

1. from 30 mph in 4th gear increase revs to about 3000 rpm and hold for 4 sec.

2. from 4,600 rpm floor the throttle and hold for 4 sec.

NOTE Part 2 is not that easy to do because of the speeds reached. It can be done in 3rd gear on an empty motorway but you'll be going at around 100mph and watching rev counter. Watch out! If you do it in 2nd you'll bounce off the rev limiter. If you do it in 4th then you'll be going 120 +mph! Please be carefull.

When I did mine I got someone else to drive in front of me to make space and give me the room I needed to hit required revs.

It worked for me,

Remind me again what the purpose of this is? Sorry, I am kinda new to Corrado's and I have a VR6 so this may come in handy for me!

it can sometimes cure running problems and as its cheap and easy to do is worth trying to save you splashing out :wink:

cheers for the replys regarding being unable to drive slowly in my 16v, will try to reset ECU. as this is my first corrado at the tender age of 20 it pains me to see the car so poorly, no doubt their will be more qustions comming from me at a later date, thanks again for taking time to reply

the ECU reset isn't applicable to the 16 valve you have btw...........AFAIK its only the VR6 that can benefit from an ECU reset as the valver ECU doesnt have as complicated engine management as the VR6's

Hemz - the injectors on a valver just pull out.... but don't be shy as they need a bit of force to get them out.

 

It's possible it's your injectors, as they're mechanical their machining tolerances are extremely high and they never normally get changed. Also worth considering is your fuel lift and regular pump, fuel in a 16v is under massive pressure so it can force its way through the mechanical injectors. When you turn ignition on you should hear a 3 second buzz which is the lift pump priming, when you actually start you should then hear the whine of the regular fuel pump delivering, make sure your fuel filter is new too - can make a surprising difference, and don't put that "clean your injector goup" in your tank either, don't suppose you've let ther tank run really low recently have you? you might have dredged up crap from bottom which is now stuick in your filter.

 

Timing on a valver is preset in the control unit, there is a procedure for 'resetting' this which i can get you later if you want.

aide, cheers for your reply mate, think i was being a bit of a girl when trying to get the injectors out. Once out do u think oxy clean would be strong enough to clean them up? thanx again :D

had very similar prob on my 16v, 1.8, dunno what u have but it was biach 2 drive, tracked it down to a split in the air pipe directly off the airbox, u pulled away, and split opened up - engine died - split closed, enging fired up again. split opened, fixed mine with good old pvc tape, and stil on there now!

I've never cleaned my injectors! Either get a new set £20ea - or get a specialist to check em out, Bosch centres do this. Gotta consider the injectors are the last thing in line from tank - lift pump - regular pump(battery) - filter - metering head - injectors so could be one of the others causing dodgy fuel delivery.

 

Of course there's a quick method of testing the injectors with a jam jar! Obviously pull one out at a time, put em in jam jar for fixed amount of time and see they all fill with equal amounts. Never done this myself tho.

also make sure they're not leaking when the ignition is first switched on as a leaky injector can cause difficult starting and lumpy idle too... ;)

you legend, after renewing fuel filter,plugs,leads,rotor arm,coil and complete power flow system i found a 3" split on the air intake, when the car was ticking over i pulled this split apart a little and she died, started her up again squeezed the split together and the revs picked up(their was me worrying about injectors). Having had the power flow system fitted when the car was poorly i have not driven it to its potential as next job is new cambelt. will i get alot better performance with powerflow? Does anyone know how long the vw stealers put warranty on cambelt, if at all?

 

Cheers guys i can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel after buying the corrado of a complete n## jockey who spent all his money making it look nice and left all the important stuff, like actually getting it to run properly. no doubt something new will pop up in the next month.
