Flickery handbrake light ?

Hi I'm new to these boards and I've only had my Corrado for a month or so now, totally loving it though btw ;)

 

But I've noticed the last few days the light which is on when the handbrake is up has started to flicker when i accelerate, is this to indicate something ?

does this on mine too - have put it down to a bad earth which makes contact under acceleration... I guess the best thing to do is remove the housing around the h/b and check the conections. If they're good there then you'll have to trace them back to the dash.

 

Good luck getting this sorted and let me know what caused the problems as it may be the same cause on mine

A common problem with the Corrado is that the handbrake warning light earth contact switch becomes loose on it's mount to the handbrake. The switch is held to the handbrake by a single plastic barbed pin, this becomes worn and loose and allows the switch to no longer be acted upon by the handbrake. Replacement is the only proper cure and the switch costs £3 from dealer. Sadly the early style switches have been replaced by an updated part so one also has to get the wiring and plug to update the loom. This is a nominal cost also and therefore not a major concern.

with Gav on this one... Check the fluid level first, especially as you say it does it under acceleration when the fluid will be sloshing around and causing the sensor to mis-read slightly...

I've checked what I think is the brake fluid level, a small bottle in the upper left corner of my engine bay (vr6) is that the brake fuild ?

 

If so then I think this is whats causing it as its very low, I would top it up but I'm so new to this car I dont even know what type of fluid to use :oops: any suggestions for a L plate vr6 ?

 

All this has actually reminded me btw how much I actually need a manual, I'm told haynes dont do one, any others any of you know about ?

get some good quality DOT5.1 from Halfords... (it's labelled as "high performance brake fluid" and is in a black container with orange writing on it ;) ) DOT5.1 is the best you can get for a Corrado and will happily mix with any other fluid that is already in your system with no problems and means you can rest assured that if anything, you're topping up with BETTER fluid than is already in there! 8)

 

There's a manual by Robert Bentley that can be bought off Amazon, but beware that it's about £80 ish! :crazyeyes: It's also an american book, so it's not quite spot on for our cars, but is closer than anything else out there... It also comes on CD too... 8)

I'd bet that a fuild change wouldn't go amiss. No telling when it was last done. More than 2 years ago and it should be replaced at the earliest opportunity.

Thanks for the help guys, I'l give it a top up but I'l add a fluid change to the current list of things I need to do :)

No apologies required. This is stuff you need to know to save yourself money.A cheeky garage could have billed you big style for an egg cup of brake fluid. 'Yeah we replaced the master cylinder, that'll be 300 plus the dreaded'.

If the brake fluid level is low then it probably is indicative that your brake linings are worn, this is assuming no leaks are evident of course. It would be wise to check your brakes fully for wear before being satisfied with a top up.
