monVR6 0 Posted December 24, 2004 Merry Christmas everyone. OK - enjoying the clear roads this morning on the way to work and caned the VR in second round on a right bend on one of those big oblong roundabouts. As I got to the next corner on the roundabout, (still going round to the right) the steering was scarily light and felt like it was on grease - (but wasn't) - then as I exited the roundabout turning left, steering felt much heavier on the other lock. I think this sounds classic rack problems - (yes I still haven't done that yet) - but I just wondered if there is anything else that could contribute to this. Santa - bring me a rack !!!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 24, 2004 Yes classic symptom of a dying rack i.e. more weight in one direction than t'other. What are your balls like.....of the joint variety? Took me ages to get mine all sorted but it's just about there now. I think only the column/UJs are pooping the party at the moment but otherwise my Ebay rack was a damn good purchase :)
monVR6 0 Posted December 24, 2004 My balls are just fine thanks Kev :D I had them replaced by stealth - (and I don't mean when I wasn't looking!!)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 24, 2004 LOL, glad you're balls are OK mate.... Keep your eyes peeled on eBay because the chap I got mine from often sticks racks on there. And here's a tip - search for a MK3 GTI/16V/VR6 rack, and not Corrado
dr_mat 0 Posted December 24, 2004 The guy who sold Kev's rack doesn't have any more. It was a close-out at a dealership or something. All old stock being got rid of. I asked.. :)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 24, 2004 Ah well, keep looking though as I'm sure one will appear on there again sooner or later!
dr_mat 0 Posted December 24, 2004 The only other question to ask yourself about these steering issues, monVR6, is what were your engine revs at the time? It's possible that the PAS pump is not maintaining consistent pressure, and over-pressuring at times. Worth a thought. But it's most likely the rack, imho. That said, the PAS pump is quite a lot cheaper than a new rack!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 24, 2004 The PAS pump would over pressurise at lower speeds if one or more of the vanes jams open....as the crank speed increases, the pressure reduces
dr_mat 0 Posted December 24, 2004 Not entirely convinced that makes sense, but hey, I never did figure out how it maintains constant pressure under such varying input rotation speed...
Graham_E 0 Posted December 24, 2004 this is exactly whats happening to mine...going upto stealth in the new year...spose id better book it in first  so ill get them to give the front end a check whilst there changing me suspension and bushes. You need to actually lift a spanner Matt and take one apart to see what I mean
dr_mat 0 Posted December 24, 2004 When I have one spare I'll do that... Anyway, I don't do spanners. Screwdrivers is my thing.. :)
