:: :: Heater matrix by-pass valve :: ::

They are not required for cars built after 92ish - all the later heater matrices have this feature built-in.

Check that your local dealer cannot find one in another dealer. I was told last week that VW are trying to get more of these valves made. A reliable scource at VW.

The bypass valves stop the matrix from blowing. They do fail and I have had it happen to me. You get hardly any heat in the cabin due to really poor flow thru the matrix. New valves sort it out.

You can remove the valves and join up the pipes again.

Thing is if 5 year old matrixes were blowing, then one more than 10 years old must be more likely to go.

A new improved matrix is about the same money as a valve kit. A swine to fit but if you can't get the valves then it's your only option IMO. You can then bin the valves anyway.
