my abs does not operate , not a problem for me i dont like the stuff anyway ! but does anyone know the position concerning mot , will it fail coz of inoperative abs

would not have thought so unless the abs sensors r causing one of the brake calipers not to work........unlikely though. Should be fine.

 

 

U will miss it trying to brake on a wet motorway!

ok i will give it a go , but what about the light which does not operate at all?

braking in the wet ? i thought these cars were made with brakes that dont lock up let alone stop you! seems to me abs is redundant anyway !

This has been answered before (lots), but:

A proper MOT test will include checking if the ABS light comes on as it should when the ignition is turned on, and that it then goes out again within 4 seconds, as it should, and that it does not come back ON at any time during the test. Any deviation from this is an automatic MOT failure. They even have charts detailing what the light should and shouldn't do..

The dodgy garages might not care so much, but YMMV.

if you remove the light unit before it goes in for it's mot then you should be fine... if it ain't there then who is to say it's fitted?

 

I only say this as in a past post someone said that this is what they did and they got away with it ;)

I had intermittant problem with my ABS light, kept coming on every now and then while driving. Asked main dealer to look at the problem twice and both times they said there was no reported fault, yet when I took it to an independant VW specialist the fault came up striaght away on the computer. Turned out to be a dirty big brake pedal travel sensor. Works fine now a new one has been fitted.

Good grief !! We are talking about a system that is there to save your (and others') lives, whether you like it or not. If you want to skid uncontrollably into a tree, I suppose that's your business but I would rather you don't do so into me or anyone else (in that order).

I only say this as in a past post someone said that this is what they did and they got away with it ;)

 

Any good MOT inspector would spot that the car has a SODDING HUGE ABS pump under the bonnet, and sensors on the wheels and instantly fail the car on non-functioning ABS if you "remove the light unit"... :roll:

 

Also, if you DO have an accident in which someone is injured, your car is on the roads illegally (it's not in a condition to pass an MOT) and you will get royally screwed by the police, insurance companies and the other party and found to have been driving a car which was not fit to use on the public highways... :|

 

Personally, I'd fix the ABS! :lol:

 

Oh, and if I found out about a garage which didn't notice something like this, I'd never go near 'em with a barge pole again, 'cos if they've missed something that big, what else have they missed which could cost me MY life as well as some other poor bugger who happens to be in the wrong place... :|

:oops: this was only a quick fix suggestion and I was only repeating something I have read else where on this forum... my ABS works fine and if it didn't then I'd fix it too - my car, life and others lives are way too important to me and I wouldn't want to risk driving without serviced and fully functional brakes!!!

That's one reason why I was particuarly annoyed that the main dealer couldn't/wouldn't solve my ABS problem, as I knew I was driving around with only semi-operational ABS. Luckily the one time I did need it, when a lady stepped out in front of my car, the light was off and hence the ABS was working, and indeed did work, otherwise I'd have had this lady bouncing off my bonnet.

 

Was actually one of things that I thought about when looking for a C to buy, as my last car BMW E36 coupe had ABS and I didn't really want to have a car that didn't have the same.

i would like to point out that non abs brakes are still fully functioning ,millions of cars dont have and i think you may find a lot of them are very big expensive sports cars including F1

i just am not a big fan of abs.

i also checked my old mot and it passed with the light not functioning so it was obviously a bent mot.

i am in the process of getting it repaired starting with a new light ,HOW MUCH !!!
