randal 0 Posted March 30, 2005 Anyone had any experience of fitting one of these? Mine is a bit loose, thought it might be cool to upgrade as opposed to replace. The only possible problem I can see is the curved edges, the 'rado ones are square - dunno about wiring also. tia randal
Henny 0 Posted March 30, 2005 those ones he's selling don't have a sunroof switch... read it carefully... ;) The interior light has permanent live, ignition live, earth and door switch connections (he mentions 4 wires). Only the ignition live isn't on the existing interior light, but you may be able to pick that up from your sunroof power supply. No idea if it'd fit or not... it may not be deep enough (from windscreen to sunroof) to cover the hole in the headlining under the original unit... :|
randal 0 Posted March 30, 2005 Ah, I knew there'd be a gotcha! I'll be OK about the sunroof switch, as I've got the early valver with the seperate switch. Was more worried about the whole unit fitting in the destined hole. All in all, it sounds possible - just a bit of a mare if it doesn't fit. Damn this has got me toying with "red-ifying" my switches and dash clocks now too. Although isn't red an arse with the dash clocks, I remember reading something about naff visability? ta for the response randal
Phil K 0 Posted March 30, 2005 The thing I like about those are the LED downlighters... have been thinking about getting a couple of these to fit in the roof to give the cabin a bit of extra subtle lighting... randal_24, you do realise that the switches light up red which means you'll end up wanting to change them to green or do the rest of your lighting in red - lots of hard work but could be worth it  Easiest way is to go and measure one up at the dealers if you wanna find out if it'll fit
randal 0 Posted March 30, 2005 Hey Phil, guess what I'm staring at right now? :D UltraLEDS.co.uk, DDI 3mm 12V LED's and how to take apart dash clocks on that Canadian webby! Must be glutton for punishment... Nah, seriously though I reckon it's totally do-able without too much fuss. I'm thinking 10 3mm LED's for the switches (say 15, allowing for cock ups), 3 (say 5) for the dash clocks and we're away. Only thing I'm still unsure of is if that would fit - however, the trip to the stealer is a neat idea. In an ideal world that bora/golf fitting would be square based, with a curved lip to over hang on the headliner. D'ya reckon the sales people would mind me yoinking the light fitting out of a golf and "testing" it in me rado? Was just about to MSN you about another thread btw, then it crapped out! Damn you Gates, damn you good...
randal 0 Posted March 31, 2005 Mailed the guy earlier who is taking measurements of the light, see if we can get away with this. If it's all good , i'm now toying with changing the red in light to green LED's to match the car. Then change the red LED's for the ambient light to ultra bright blues, matches the stereo/dash that way - without changing every switch in the car  edit - or amber, match the "on" indicators on the switches. randal 0 Posted March 31, 2005 Emailed the seller on the 'bay, and got this response. Now this is comedy.... You asked: "Just wondering if you'd heard of any one retro-fitting one of these into a 1990 corrado? regards" REPLY: I dont think it will work unless the car has a drive by wire ECU 4 wires going into the fitting. + - Door switch Boot switch? So where does the ECU figure in that? I'm stumped

randal 0 Posted April 1, 2005 Turns out that was the wrong question he answered :joker: Hey ho. However, he did answer a subsequent question about it. Apparently the standard 3 wire loom is good to go, a wire from the headlight switch just needs to be run to allow the LED's to function whilst the headlights are on. He also dropped me the dimensions: Standard fitting is : 150mm X 70mm on the outside lip Inside edge is: 132mm X 53mm The Passat/Bora light is: 160mm X 78mm on the outside lip Inside edge is: 147mm X 65mm I reckon the headlining can be cut back, and strengthened with fibreglass - should work out AOK. I'm going to wait until I get back off holiday, grab one, green LED it, hack up the head lining, then I'll post a pic. randal

randal 0 Posted April 7, 2005 OK, it should be here tomorrow all being well and good. I've been reading through the instructions on how to fit to a MK4 Golf, all looks like a doddle. The wiring to the doors and power is no problem, as will be running an "on" wire to the headlight switch. It lists pin 17 on the MK4 headlight switch as the one that activates the LED ambience when the headlights are on - I'm guessing the same one that does the dash illumination. Does anyone know which pin this is on the early rado switch? tia randal
Henny 0 Posted April 8, 2005 um, if you use the dash illumination wire, the ambience LEDs will dim with the dash lights... Is that what you want to do? :?
randal 0 Posted April 8, 2005 Should be too much of a problem, as I leave the dash illumination set at top and don't twiddle with it. Unless I fat finger the headlight switch  Hmm, mood lighting for the car... :D
