Scary stuff...

Recommended Posts

Took my C to Elite Wheels & Tyres in Reading on Saturday in order to get some new shoes (Michelin Exalto) and when they came round to doing the tracking, the N/S/F track rod came off in the guys hand!

So, my C could have lost all steering at any moment...

Mind you, not only did they diagnose my current steering problems (cv boot & steering rack) they weren't happy for me to drive with a loose track rod. So they called up a local VW/Audi specialist who was kind enough to tighten my track rod for free!

Needless to say, the VW Chap concerned (Richard Holder, RT Holder Autos) gets my business for fixing the steering problems 8)

Thanks to them both!

Further to my last, I took my C to Richard today and he's sorted out my steering problems! He's a really friendly guy and he seems to know his veedubs. Apparently he recently did an angine change on a C VR6 (I saw half the old one out the back), so I'm guessing that makes him pretty competent.

Anyway, in addition to tightening the track rod the other day, he fitted a new CV boot kit, new steering rack bolt, recentered the steering wheel and took it back to Elite to get the tracking finished, all for under £100 all in.

As a result I would reccomend this chap to anyone who's looking for some honest & friendly service! I don't know how good that price is, but I was pleasently suprised, given the money I've spent on my C to date!

and if you can also give a brief description why you rate his services highly again

More than happy to do that!

(Shame it was wet on the way home, I soooooo wanted to play... oh and the experience of driving with a steering wheel who's horizontal bit is at angle of about 20 degrees (when in a straight line!) is not for the faint hearted!

Spoke to him today, waiting for a quote on timing chains.. Not looking forward to it, given that he says they charge £45/hr!

dr_mat,

I'll be honest mate, I didn't know what his hourly rate was... ...just needed someone to fix me my car

Looking at my notes he charged me £95.50 for the following work (including parts/labout & VAT)

Tightened N/S/F track rod

New N/S/F CV boot kit

New steering rack bolt

Centered steering wheel

Tracking

Any repairs to the C that come in under £100 sounds like you got yourself a baaaaargiin to me...

(Of course he did do the diagnostic work, and tightened & checked stuff for free, before I booked my car in).

I've got several people I use depending on how difficult the jobs are (and whether it's mechanical or electrical and/or VAG specific).

In the first instance, I've now started going to PL Autos (one of the owners lives across the road from me  ).

If changing the timing chains isn't a monsterly complicated job, I suggest you give PL a ring for a quote as well (and ask for either Mark or Lyndon), their number's 0118 959 1007, they're on Cardiff Rd. (nr. ECP).

See the following link for my thoughts on PL Autos:
