Just wondering if this is a one off or common. My mum has just bought a Audi convertible which has a 2.0 turbo engine and I think this is the same block shared with other VAG cars.

Yep, 02Js throw the diff pins through the casing too.....and that's precisely where the hole is...adjacent to the diff.

 

It's been a known issue since the 020 box (MK2 Golf) and VAG are too tight to use bolts instead of rivets on the diff crown wheel.

 

It's usually load related.....the harder you drive it, the stronger the likelihood of a diff pin letting go. I'm only aware of half a dozen instances, so it's not THAT common a problem.

Bad story.. but the chap is being rather negetive about VAG. All manufactures have there problems.

 

Look at his favourite for example - BMW with mini! I remember hearing the odd story about them catching fire!
