VAG COM ABS Fault Code 00561 Left Rear Outlet Valve

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with the brake peddle pressure changing intermittently while driving.

basically under braking the peddle will change from being hard to press to very light.

i've checked it on VAG COM,sometimes it shows up other times not but the problem is there pretty much all the time.

i'm leaning towards replacing the ABS Pump - £1100 + from VAG !,but i can get a used one with a 2 month guarantee for £100 all in.

anyone have any ideas ?

Could well be the ABS control unit thats buggered, cheaper than the pump and easier to fit. The pump is a pain to change and obviously buying a second hand one has it's problems especially if you pay a mechanic to fit it! Also make sure that the system has been properly bled, as this can cause pump errors.

Although this sounds mad, AFAIK you can purge the pump by driving at at steady speed (20mph) and flooring the brakes and then do the same in reverse. This can dissipate any air locks in the pump which can also cause errors.

Various breakers will sell you pump for around the £100 mark, but as I said a guarantee is all very well but if you pay a mechanic £200+ to fit it and it is buggered you won't be best pleased!

Yeah good point - i'll have to make sure it's been bled too....something to think about there...

Something else to give a go although i think i've already done the first part several times, have to try reverse

ABS Left Rear Outlet Valve *often* means you have a failed valve block on the ABS unit.

I think it tests the left rear valve first during ignition-on tests, so that's the one that shows up first.

Certainly it did for me.

The upside is that apart from the 2-3 hours labour for fitting, they're on the whole quite reliable, so if you buy a 2nd hand one, warranty or otherwise, chances are it will be ok.

My replacement pump unit cost me £20, and most of that was postage .. :)

(Of course, now that I've said that, it'll break ... :( )

Arrgh now i don't know what to do - i could take a chance & just buy the dam thing (& get it fitted a lot cheaper by my mate, who's a very good mechanic - prepares rally cars),or take it to my VAG mechanic although not through VW is still expensive (it's catching) but shit hot with all things VAG & would certainly get to the bottom of things, but would cost a lot more if it turns out to be the pump - flip a coin time :brickwall:

Well - if you are getting occasional "abs light on from ignition on" and the ECU is reporting "left rear outlet valve" then you almost certainly need a new ABS block. I wouldn't even consider buying one from the dealers though, when 2nd hand ones are plentiful, cheap and on the whole quite reliable.

Think of it this way. How many mistakes can you afford to make with dodgy 2nd hand ones and STILL have it massively cheaper than a new one? Lots...

That's the problem, the ABS light isn't coming on @ all - totally agree there's no way i'd buy new...you'd have to be nuts..over 10 times cheaper to buy second hand !

You're getting ABS fault codes and you never get the ABS light on?

Does it come on during the power-on-self-test cycle when you turn the ignition on?

"You're getting ABS fault codes and you never get the ABS light on?"

Yes

"Does it come on during the power-on-self-test cycle when you turn the ignition on?"

No

You think the previous owner disabled the ABS light after finding out the cost of an ABS Pump ?

Err... YUP!

(Oh, and not only does that land you with a big bill, but you are probably also in posession of a non-legal MOT certificate, cos the car definitely shouldn't have passed if the light wasn't working when it was tested! :( )

Well you've seen yourself what they cost to buy. When mine was replaced I did ok - 2.5 hours labour and the part cost very little because it came from a breakers.

No warranty though, so I was screwed if it had been dead, too, but so far, touching anything made of wood ..
